3E-E Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine undercover(s).
  8.  
  9. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Using tool SST 096160-12011 or equivalent to hold the oil pump pulley, remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil filler cap and oil dipstick.
  16.  
  17. Remove two nuts and eight bolts and remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    When separating the oil pan from the engine, use care not to damage the oil pan.

To install:

  1. Clean oil pan to remove all loose material. Install the oil pan and new gasket. Torque the bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (working from the center to the ends).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil dipstick.
  4.  
  5. Install timing belt and timing belt covers.
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust header pipe using new gaskets. Torque bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the engine undercover(s).
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle and refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and inspect for leaks.

5e-FE

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely, then drain the oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil dipstick.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Suspend the engine with a hoist.
    NOTE
    Do not raise the engine more than necessary, since wiring and other components can be damaged.

  13. Remove the crankshaft timing sprocket and oil pump sprocket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the air conditioning compressor and mounting bracket by removing the bolts.
  16.  
  17. For vehicles with distributor ignition, disconnect the exhaust pipe stay.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the oxygen sensor.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe by removing the two bolts and two compression springs.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ten oil pan bolts on 1995-97 vehicles or the 8 bolts and 2 nuts on 1993-94 vehicles, then remove the oil pan.

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using a new gasket and sealer, install the oil pan. Torque the bolts as follows:

    1993-94-74 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    1995-97-10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Connect the front exhaust pipe using a new gasket. Torque the two bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the oxygen sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the exhaust pipe stay, if removed. the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket and torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the A/C compressor to the bracket using the four bolts. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft timing and oil pump sprockets.
  16.  
  17. Install the timing belt.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil dipstick.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  24.  
  25. Install the hood.
  26.  
  27. Start the engine check for leaks.
  28.
