3E-E Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand engine splash shield. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold. Remove the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil. Remove the oil pan, the oil strainer and the dipstick.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and the tensioner spring bracket. Remove the oil pump.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the pump with sealer and a new O-ring.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt and crankshaft pulleys.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan and dipstick assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust pipe and any front end components previously removed.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine undercover.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle. Refill with engine oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

5E-FE Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support it safely, then drain the oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil dipstick.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Suspend the engine with a hoist.
    WARNING
    Do not raise the engine more than necessary, since wiring and other components can be damaged.

  13. Remove the necessary items for access, then remove the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three bolts and oil strainer with the O-ring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pressure regulator valve.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump by removing the nine bolts and tension spring bracket. Use a soft faced hammer to remove the oil pump.
  20.  
  21. Using a vise, remove the nut and oil pump pulley.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump pulley by first placing the driven rotors into the pump body with the marks facing the front.
  4.  
  5. Align the pulley and oil pump driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a vise, install the oil pump pulley and nut. Torque the nut to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the pressure regulator valve and torque to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Using a new O-ring, install the oil strainer with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Using a new gasket and sealer, install the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Install all remaining components in the reverse order they were removed.
  16.  
  17. Fill the engine with oil.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  20.  
  21. Install the hood.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine check for leaks.
