Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left engine undercover and drain the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS brakes, disconnect the ABS speed sensor by removing bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap from the halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Apply the brake and remove the hub nut.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower control arm by removing bolt and two nuts.
  16.  
  17. Using a plastic hammer, disconnect the halfshaft from the axle hub.
  18.  
  19. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap the inner joint out of the transaxle and remove the halfshaft.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Using a new snapring, push the halfshaft into the transaxle until it clicks into position. Pull on the inner joint to make sure it is fully installed.
  2.  
  3. Push the outer joint into the axle hub.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint to the lower arm and torque the bolt and two nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the tie rod to the knuckle and torque the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). If the cotter pin cannot be installed, tighten to the next hole. Do not loosen the nut.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub nut and torque to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Refill the transaxle. Install the undercover and the wheel.
  12.  
  13. Check the front wheel alignment.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
