Ball Type

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995-1996

The combination switch is composed of the turn signal, the headlight control, the dimmer switch, the wiper, and the washer switch.


CAUTION
The Air Bag System must be disarmed before performing this procedure. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column shroud screws and the shrouds.
  4.  
  5. Remove the combination switch screws and the switch from the column.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the combination switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the light control switch by removing the screws.
  10.  
  11. To remove the light switch on vehicles with an air bag, do the following:
    1. Remove the screws and the spiral cable from the switch body.
    2.  
    3. Remove the screws and the lock plate from the switch body.
    4.  
    5. Remove the screws and the ball set plate from the switch body.
    6.  
    7. Remove the ball and slide out the switch from the switch body with the spring.
    8.  
    9. Remove the screws and light dimmer turn switch unit.
    10.

  13. Remove the wiper washer switch by removing the screws.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiper washer switch to the combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the light control switch.
  4.  
  5. Push the wires into the connector until they lock securely in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the switch into the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Center the spiral cable as follows:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the green mark.
    6.

  13. Install the steering wheel and torque the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.

Screw-On Type

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995-1996

The combination switch incorporates the headlight switch, turn signal switch and the windshield wiper switch.


CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the combination switch. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage, or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Position the front wheels in a straight-ahead position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel No. 1 undercover sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel lower finish panel and cluster finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel center pad.
    NOTE
    When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the air bag harness connector. When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Since the air bag connector has a 2-stage lock, remove the 1st stage lock and disconnect the connector.

  13. Remove the steering wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column covers. Remove the combination switch retaining screws. Disconnect the connectors and remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column.

  17. Loosen the mounting screws and remove the turn signal switch from the switch body.
  18.  
  19. Separate the bracket from the wiper switch body. Remove the wiper switch from the switch body.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiper switch to the switch body and connect the mounting bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the turn signal switch to the switch body and tighten the mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the combination switch assembly to the steering column and tighten the mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors. Push in the terminals until they are securely locked in the connector lug.
    NOTE
    The spiral cable matchmarks must be aligned for correct installation with the front wheels in the straight head position.

  9. Install both steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Center the spiral cable as follows:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the cable clockwise about three turns to align the red mark.
    6.

  13. Install the steering wheel, using the proper tool.
  14.  
  15. Connect the air bag connector and replace the 1st stage lock.
  16.  
  17. Install the cluster finish panel. Install the steering wheel center pad and connect the wire connector.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower instrument trim panel and cover assembly.
  20.  
  21. Enable the air bag system.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.
