Removal & Installation



Front Cable
Lever Operated

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995-1996

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the parking brake lever console box.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retainer nut located on the top of the lever shaft.
  6.  
  7. From under the vehicle disconnect the cable from the equalizer and extract the cable from the lever assembly. Remove the cable from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the cable to the equalizer.
  2.  
  3. Install the cable to the lever assembly and secure with the retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the brake lever console box.
  6.  
  7. Safely lower the vehicle and check for proper operation.
  8.  

Pedal Operated

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995-1996

  1. Remove the left inner kick panel to access the parking brake pedal assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retainer clip from the pin on the pedal assembly and withdraw the pin from the bracket and the eye of the cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spring clip holding the cable to the brake pedal assembly and remove the cable.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the rear portion of the front parking brake wire and remove from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Reconnect the rear portion of the brake cable.
  2.  
  3. Install the front of the brake cable to the brake pedal assembly and install the spring clip.
  4.  
  5. Install the pin through the pedal bracket and the eye of the brake cable and secure with the retainer clip.
  6.  
  7. Reinstall the left inner kick panel.
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Rear Cables
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Working from underneath of the car, loosen the locknut on the parking brake cable equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum or rotor from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, remove the rear brake shoe and disconnect the parking brake cable from the shoe.
  10.  
  11. Working on the shoe side of the backing plate, evenly compress the brake cable locking tines where the cable comes through the backing plate. At the same time, pull the cable free from behind the backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear cable from the equalizer assembly and remove the cable from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear parking brake cable from behind the backing plate. Make sure all the locking tines are on the front side of the brake backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear brake cable to the equalizer.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear brake shoe lever to the rear brake cable and reinstall the brake shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum or rotor, adjust the rear shoes, and adjust the brake cable. Tighten the equalizer locknut.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Safely lower the vehicle and road test for proper operation.
