Fig. Brake drum and shoe assembly-1995-97

  1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly. Release the parking brake.
  2.
  3. Block the front wheels, raise the rear of the vehicle, and safely support it with jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheel lug nuts and the wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the grease cap.
  8.
  9. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
  10.
  11. Remove the nut.
  12.
  13. Remove the brake drum assembly with bearings, being careful not to drop the bearings. If there is difficulty in removing the drum, insert a suitable tool through the hole in the rear of the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster. Using another suitable tool at the same time, reduce the brake shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install the drum with inner bearing onto the spindle.
  2.
  3. Install the outer bearing and washer.
  4.
  5. Install the nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) while turning the drum assembly several turns.
  6.
  7. Loosen the nut until it can be turned freely by hand.
  8.
  9. Measure the rotation frictional force of the oil seal.
  10.
  11. Tighten the nut until preload is 0-2.6 lbs. (0-11.8 N) plus frictional force.
  12.
  13. Install the lock cap, cotter pin, and the grease cap.
  14.
  15. Pull the parking brake lever all the way up until a clicking sound can no longer be heard.
  16.
  17. Verify that the rear wheels will not turn. If the rear wheels turn, adjust the parking brake cable as necessary.
  18.
  19. Release the parking brake and remove the brake drum. Measure the brake drum inside diameter and diameter of the brake shoes. Check that the difference between the diameters is the correct shoe clearance. Clearance is 0.024 in. (0.60mm).
  20.
  21. If the brake shoe clearance is not correct, adjust the brake shoes until the clearance is correct. Reinstall the drum.
  22.
  23. Install the rear wheels, tighten the wheel lug nuts and lower the vehicle.
  24.
  25. Retighten the wheel lug nuts and pump the brake pedal a few times before moving the vehicle.
