3E-E & 5E-FE Engines



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. On the 5E-FE engine, remove the air intake duct.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, remove the upper radiator or lower hose.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with a thermoswitch in the thermostat housing, unplug the lead wire.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat housing by removing the two nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the gasket and thermostat from the engine.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use a new thermostat gasket. Install the thermostat with the spring inside the engine block. Align the juggle valve on the thermostat with the protrusion on the thermostat housing.

  4.  
  5. Install the thermostat housing and retaining bolts. On the 3E-E and 5E-FE engines, torque the nuts to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the upper radiator or lower hose.
  8.  
  9. Connect the air intake duct.
  10.  
  11. Connect any wire connectors previously removed.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Fill and bleed the cooling system properly.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
