3E-E Engine



Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1995

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right side engine undercover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the HAC valve from the bracket, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil dipstick.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake manifold bracket located behind the alternator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the No. 1 water by-pass hose, if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil dipstick guide.
  20.  
  21. Remove the alternator and adjusting bar.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the intake manifold water hose from the intake manifold, if equipped.
  24.  
  25. Remove the water pump pulley.
  26.  
  27. Remove the water inlet pipe mounting bolt from the cylinder block.
  28.  
  29. Remove the water pump attaching bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump assembly.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Scrape any remaining gasket material off the pump mating surface. Apply a 2-3mm (0.08-0.12 in.) bead of sealant to the groove in the pump.
  2.  
  3. Replace the O-ring on the water inlet pipe and lubricate the O-ring with a little soap and water. Install the pump assembly. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the water inlet pipe to the cylinder block with a bolt.
  6.  
  7. Temporarily install the water pump pulley.
  8.  
  9. Connect the intake manifold water hose to the intake manifold, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Install alternator and adjusting bar.
  12.  
  13. Replace the O-ring on the oil dipstick guide and install the assembly. Temporarily install the alternator adjusting bar and dipstick guide clamp bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the No. 1 water by-pass hose, if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Install the intake manifold bracket.
  18.  
  19. Install the alternator belt and adjust.
  20.  
  21. Install the oil dipstick.
  22.  
  23. Install the HAC valve to the bracket.
  24.  
  25. Install the right side engine undercover.
  26.  
  27. Refill the engine with coolant.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable and start the engine.
  30.  
  31. Check for coolant leaks.
  32.

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1996-1999

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Alternator
     
    With distributorless ignition, intake manifold stay bracket by disconnecting the wire clamps and removing the 2 nuts
     
    With distributor ignition, remove the intake manifold stay bracket by removing the 2 nuts and 2 bolts.
     
    Water inlet pipe
     
    Oil dipstick guide
     
    Alternator adjusting bar
     
    Water pump attaching bolt and nuts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    0.08-0.12 in. (2-3mm) bead of sealant to the groove in the pump.
     
    O-ring, lubricated with a little soap and water, on the water inlet pipe.
     
    Water pump. Bolts: 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
     
    Oil dipstick guide
     
    Alternator adjusting bar
     
    Dipstick guide clamp bolt
     
    Water inlet pipe. Bolt: 65 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
     
    Water bypass, heater inlet and water inlet hoses
     
    For distributorless ignition engines, install the intake manifold bracket by installing the 2 bolts and the wire clamp. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    For distributor ignition, install the intake manifold bracket by installing the 2 bolts. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Alternator and belt
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Fill the coolant system to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

Specific to:

Toyota Tercel 1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator.
  6.  
  7. For engines with distributorless ignition, remove the intake manifold stay bracket by disconnecting the wire clamps and removing the two nuts.
  8.  
  9. For engine with distributor ignition, remove the intake manifold stay bracket by removing the two nuts and two bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water inlet pipe as follows:
    1. Disconnect the water inlet hose.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the heater hose.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the bypass hose.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt, water inlet pipe, and O-ring.
    8.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the oil dipstick guide.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator adjusting bar.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump attaching bolt and nuts. Remove the water pump assembly.
  18.  

To install:

  5. Replace the O-ring on the oil dipstick guide and install the assembly. Install the alternator adjusting bar and dipstick guide clamp bolt.
  6.  
  7. Connect the water inlet pipe to the cylinder block with a bolt. Tighten the bolt to 65 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the water by-pass, heater inlet and water inlet hoses.
  10.  
  11. For distributorless ignition engines, install the intake manifold bracket by installing the two bolts and the wire clamp. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12.  
  13. For distributor ignition, install the intake manifold bracket by installing the two bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the alternator and belt.
  16.  
  17. Refill the engine with coolant.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable and start the engine.
  20.  
  21. Check for coolant leaks.
  22.
