Removal & Installation
The Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) (2) and the Antilock Brake Module (ABM) (1) used with this Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) are combined (integrated) into one unit, which is called the Integrated Control Unit (ICU).
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and isolate it.
- Remove the battery shield and battery.
- Using a brake pedal depressor, move and lock the brake pedal to a position past the first inch of pedal travel. This will prevent brake fluid from draining out of the master cylinder once the brake tubes are removed from the hydraulic control module.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the speed control servo.
- Remove the speed control servo mounting nuts and move the servo out of the way.
Disconnect the 47-pin connector from the control module by depressing the tabs on each side of the connector cover, then pulling outward and upward on the lower half of the cover until it locks into position pointing straight outward. The connector can then be pulled straight outward off the module.
WARNINGBefore removing the brake tubes from the hydraulic control module, it must be thoroughly cleaned. This must be done to prevent dirt particles from falling into the ports of the hydraulic control module or entering the brake tubes.
- Thoroughly clean all surfaces of the control module and brake tube nuts. Use only a solvent such as MOPAR® Brake Parts Cleaner, or equivalent.
- Remove the primary and secondary brake tubes from the inlet ports on the hydraulic control module.
- Remove the four chassis brake tubes from the outlet ports on the hydraulic control module.
- Remove the single mounting bolt, then slide the mounting pins (on bottom of the unit) out of the grommets in the bracket. Remove the control module assembly. If necessary, remove the hydraulic control module from the control module.
- Place the control module in its bracket below the master cylinder by first inserting the mounting pins on the bottom into the grommets mounted in the bracket, then install the single mounting bolt on the side. Tighten the mounting bolt to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
Install the 4 chassis brake tubes into their correct port locations on the hydraulic control module. Tighten the tube nuts to 120 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
WARNINGThe brake tubes must be routed to the correct ports. Improper routing can lead to degraded or undesirable system performance including external brake fluid leaks.
WARNINGBecause of the flexible section in the primary and secondary brake tubes, the brake tubes must be held in proper orientation when tightened. These tubes must not contact each other or other vehicle components when installed. Also, after the brake tubes are installed, ensure all spacer clips are reinstalled on the brake tubes.
- Install the primary and secondary brake tubes into their correct port locations on the hydraulic control module. Tighten the tube nuts to 120 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
- Install any routing clips on the brake tubes.
- With connector cover completely open, install the 47-pin wiring connector into socket of the control module and close cover, locking the connector in place.
- Remove the brake pedal holder.
- Connect the negative cable on the battery negative post.
- Hook up a scan tool to initialize the control module and check for any faults.
- Fill master cylinder with clean, fresh MOPAR® Brake Fluid, or equivalent, then bleed the brake base and ABS hydraulic systems.
- Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the brakes.
