Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  10.  
  11. Insert Special Tool 8450 (2) into the crankshaft nose.
  12.  
  13. Position 3-jaw puller Special Tool 1026 (2) on the damper. Turn the puller forcing the screw until the damper releases from the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper.

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft vibration damper using the forcing screw, nut, and thrust bearing/washer (3) from Special Tool 8452 (1).
    NOTE
    To minimize friction and prolong tool life, lubricate the threads on the forcing screw of Special Tool 8452.

  3. Position the vibration damper on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Screw Special Tool 8452 (1) into the crankshaft until the bolt seats. Turn the nut to install the damper until it seats fully.
  6.  
  7. Remove Special Tool 8452.

  9. Install the vibration damper bolt. Torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
  14.  

4.0L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and accessory drive belt splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Using Special Tool 1023 puller (1), and insert 9020-R (2), remove the crankshaft damper.

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft damper using Special Tools C-4685-C1 Bolt (2), with Nut and Thrust Bearing from 6792, and 6792-1 (1) Installer.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft vibration damper bolt. Torque the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  6.  
  7. Install the accessory drive belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
