3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the mating surface of the chain case cover. The surface should be smooth. Replace the cover if scratched or grooved.
  4.  
  5. Lay a straightedge across the pump cover surface. If a 0.001 inch (0.025mm) feeler gauge can be inserted between the cover and the straight edge, the cover should be replaced.

  7. Measure the thickness and diameter of the outer rotor. If the outer rotor thickness measures 0.301 inch (7.64mm) or less, or if the diameter is 3.148 inches (79.95mm) or less, replace the outer rotor.

  9. If the inner rotor thickness measures 0.301 inch (7.64mm) or less, replace the inner rotor.

  11. Install the outer rotor into the chain case cover. Press the rotor to one side and measure the clearance between the rotor and the chain case cover. If the measurement is 0.015 inch (0.39mm) or more, replace the chain case cover, only if the outer rotor is in specification.

  13. Install the inner rotor into the chain case cover. If the clearance between the inner and the outer rotors is 0.008 inch (0.203mm) or more, replace both rotors.

  15. Place a straightedge across the face of the chain case cover, between the bolt holes. If a feeler gauge of 0.004 inch (0.10mm) or more, can be inserted between the rotors and the straightedge, replace the pump assembly, ONLY if the rotors are in specification.

  17. Remove the oil pressure relief valve.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the oil pressure relief valve and bore. Inspect for scoring, pitting, and free valve operation in the bore. Small marks may be removed with 400-grit wet or dry sandpaper.
  20.  
  21. The relief valve spring has a free length of approximately 1.95 inches (49.5mm). It should test between 19.5 and 20.5 pounds when compressed to 1 11 / 32 inches (34mm). Replace the spring that fails to meet specifications.

  23. If the oil pressure is low and the pump is within specifications, inspect for worn engine bearings or other reasons for the oil pressure loss.

4.0L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disassemble the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Clean all the parts thoroughly. The mating surface of the oil pump housing should be smooth. Replace the pump cover if it is scratched or grooved.
  6.  
  7. Lay a straightedge across the pump cover surface. If a 0.001 inch (0.025mm) feeler gauge can be inserted between the cover and the straightedge, the cover should be replaced.

  9. Measure the thickness and diameter of the outer rotor. If the outer rotor thickness measures 0.563 inch (14.299mm) or less, or if the diameter is 3.141 inches (79.78mm) or less, replace the outer rotor.

  11. If the inner rotor measures 0.563 inch (14.299mm) or less, replace the inner rotor.

  13. Slide the outer rotor into the body, press it to one side and measure the clearance between the rotor and the body . If the measurement is 0.015 inch (0.39mm) or more, replace the body, only if the outer rotor is within specifications.

  15. Install the inner rotor into the body. If the clearance between the inner and outer rotors is 0.008 inch (0.20mm) or more, replace both rotors.

  17. Place a straightedge across the face of the body, between the bolt holes. If a feeler gauge of 0.003 inch (0.077mm) or more, can be inserted between the rotors and the straightedge, replace the pump assembly, ONLY if the rotors are within specifications.

  19. Inspect the oil pressure relief valve plunger for scoring and for free operation in its bore. Small marks may be removed with 400-grit wet or dry sandpaper.
  20.  
  21. The relief valve spring has a free length of approximately 1.95 inches (49.5mm), it should test between 23-25 lbs. (101-110 N) when compressed to 1 11 / 32 inches (34mm). Replace the spring that fails to meet specifications.

  23. Assemble the oil pump.

Removal & Installation



3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

The oil pump is contained within the timing chain cover housing.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing chain cover. Refer to Timing Chain Cover and Seal, removal & installation.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the oil pump from the timing chain cover.
  8.  
  9. Clean and inspect the oil pump components.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing chain cover. Refer to Timing Chain Cover and Seal, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  6.  

4.0L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

It is necessary to remove the oil pump body to service the oil pump rotors.

The oil pump pressure relief valve can be serviced by removing the oil pan.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system. (Refer to 07 - Cooling - Standard Procedure)
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Belt and Sprockets, removal & installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pickup tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump fasteners. Remove the pump and the gasket from the engine.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
Thoroughly clean all the bolt threads and the threaded area in the engine, removing all oil residue, before assembly.

  1. Prime the oil pump before installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump and the gasket carefully over the crankshaft and position the pump onto the block.
    NOTE
    DO NOT apply the thread sealant to the underside of the bolt head.

  4.  
  5. Apply MOPAR® Thread Sealant as directed on the package to the oil pump cover bolts. The sealant must be applied from the tip to approximately 10mm of the thread length. Tighten the oil pump cover bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the oil pump-to-block bolts to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install a new O-ring on the oil pickup tube.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pickup tube.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Belt and Sprockets, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Install the timing belt covers.
  18.  
  19. Install the crankshaft vibration damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belts. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  22.  
  23. Fill the cooling system with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  24.  
  25. Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level.
