Lower Ball Joints

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle allowing the front suspension to hang.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Attach the dial indicator mount on the Special Tool C-3339A (3) or equivalent, to the knuckle and align the dial indicator's plunger with the direction of the stud axis, touching the rear of the ball joint socket (2) in the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Push up on the lower control arm and zero the dial indicator.
    NOTE
    Use care when applying load to the knuckle to avoid damaging the ball joint seal boot.

  10.  
  11. From the front of the vehicle, insert a pry bar (1) between the knuckle and the lower control arm, resting it on the lower control arm. Use the lever principle to push the knuckle up from the lower control arm. Apply a load until the needle of the dial indicator no longer moves.
  12.  
  13. Record the ball joint movement. The end play is acceptable if no more than 0.039 inches (1.0mm) of end play is achieved back-to-back.
  14.  
  15. Perform this procedure on each side of the vehicle, as necessary.

Removal & Installation

WARNING
Do not remove the strut rod nut while the strut assembly is installed in the vehicle, or before the coil spring is compressed with a compression tool. The spring is held under high pressure.


WARNING
At no time when servicing a vehicle can a sheet metal screw, bolt, or other metal fastener be installed in the shock tower to take the place of an original plastic clip. It may come into contact with the strut or the coil spring.


WARNING
Wheel bearing damage will result if, after loosening the axle hub nut, the vehicle is rolled on the ground or the weight of the vehicle is allowed to be supported by the tires for any length of time.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Knuckle, removal & installation.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ball joint dust boot (1).

  11. Using a Ball Joint Press C-4212F (1), remover 8445-3 (2), and 10140-3 (3), press the ball joint out of the lower control arm.

  12.  

To install:

  1. Using Ball Joint Press C-4212F (1), installer 10140-1 (2) and 10140-2 (3), press the ball joint into the lower control arm.

  2.  
  3. Install the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Knuckle, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Perform a wheel alignment.
