Transmission Removal & Installation

This procedure covers both the four speed (A340E & A340F) and five speed (A740E & A750F) transmissions.

  1. Remove the engine under covers.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and remove the exhaust pipe assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear drive shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front drive shaft, if equipped with 4WD.
  8.  
  9. Drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and install the drain plug with a new gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive shaft heat insulator, if equipped with 4WD.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left and right front suspension member brackets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ATF dipstick, mounting bolt for the filler tube and remove the ATF filler tube.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut and disconnect the transmission control cable. Remove the lock plate and disconnect the transmission control cable. Remove the control cable bracket.
  20.  
  21. Support the transmission assembly with a suitable jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the frame crossmember and that support the transmission.
  24.  
  25. Tilt down the rear of the transmission, making sure the cooling fan does not come in contact with the fan shroud. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector and speed sensor connectors.
  26.  
  27. Remove the exhaust manifold support.
  28.  
  29. Remove the starter.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness.
  32.  
  33. If equipped with 4WD, disconnect and lower the front differential assembly.
  34.  
  35. Remove the four bolts and rear end plate.
  36.  
  37. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the six bolts with holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt by a wrench.
  38.  
  39. Remove the transmission assembly mounting bolts. Keep the bolts in order as they are different sizes and need to be installed in their original locations. Separate the transmission assembly from the engine and slowly lower the assembly to remove.

  1. Raise the transmission assembly into the vehicle and insert the mounting bolts. Tighten the 14 mm bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm). Tighten the 17 mm bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the six torque converter mounting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    NOTE
    Install the black colored bolt first.

  4.  
  5. If equipped with 4WD, raise and connect the front differential assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust manifold support and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the starter.
  10.  
  11. Connect transmission wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Install the frame crossmember. Tighten the bolts and nuts and connect to the frame to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm). Tighten the bolts to transmission to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the transmission control cable bracket and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Connect the transmission control cable with the lock plate. Connect the transmission control cable nut and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the transmission oil cooler hoses. Tighten the clamp bolts to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Coat a new O-ring with ATF and install on the end of the ATF filler tube. Install the filler tube into the transmission. Tighten the mounting bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Install the dipstick.
  20.  
  21. Install the left and right front suspension member brackets and tighten to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  22.  
  23. If equipped with 4WD, install the driveshaft heat insulator and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the rear and front (if equipped with 4WD) driveshafts.
  26.  
  27. Install the exhaust pipe assembly and engine under covers.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the shift lever position if necessary.
  30.  
  31. Fill the transmission to the correct level with fluid.
  32.  
  33. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  34.  

A340d, A340e & A340h Transmissions




NOTE
The transfer case and the transmission should be removed as an assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly, if necessary
     
    Transmission throttle cable from the throttle body
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission and transfer case (if applicable) fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wiring connectors from the transmission and transfer case, if applicable.
     
    Starter
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmarks on the front and rear driveshaft flanges and the differential pinion flanges. These marks must be aligned during installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front and rear driveshaft flanges.
     
    Center bearing bracket bolts, if equipped with a 2-piece driveshaft
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Front exhaust pipe and bracket
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines, at the transmission
     
    Oil cooler lines bracket and the transmission oil filler tube, as required
     

  12.  
  13. Support the transmission, using a jack with a wooden block placed between the jack and the transmission pan. Raise the transmission, just enough to take the weight off of the rear mount.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear engine mount with the bracket, the rear crossmember and the transfer case undercover, if applicable
     
    Dynamic damper, for Regular Cab only
     
    No. 2 cross-shaft bracket
     

  16.  
  17. Place a wooden block(s) between the engine oil pan and the front frame crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Slowly, lower the transmission until the engine rests on the wooden block(s).
  20.  
  21. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Torque converter cover to gain access to the converter bolts
     
    Torque converter bolts, by rotating the crankshaft to access the bolts through the service holes
     
    Stiffener plates from the transmission
     
    Shift control rod and the transfer case shift lever
     

  22.  
  23. For the A340H transmission remove or disconnect, perform the following:

    Cross-shaft and the No. 2 shifting rod
     
    Front stabilizer bar
     
    Differential mount bolts, by supporting the front differential with a jack
     
    Transmission and transfer case, by slowly lowering the front differential so there is enough clearance, if applicable
     
    Differential, if enough clearance can't be obtained
     

  24.  
  25. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Stabilizer bar
     
    Auxiliary frame crossmember, if equipped
     

  26.  
  27. For A340D transmissions, obtain a bolt of the same dimensions as the torque converter bolts. Cut the head off of the bolt and hacksaw a slot in the bolt opposite the threaded end. Thread the guide pin into one of the torque converter bolt holes. The guide pin will help keep the converter with the transmission.
  28.  


NOTE
This modified bolt is used as a guide pin. 2 guide pins are needed to properly install the transmission.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission bolts, then move the transmission rearward by prying on the dowel pins through the service hole
     
    Transmission/transfer case assembly
     
    Transfer case from the transmission
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Connect the transfer case to the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Apply a coat of multi-purpose grease to the torque converter stub shaft and the corresponding pilot hole in the flexplate.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter into the front of the transmission Push inward on the torque converter while rotating it to completely couple the torque converter to the transmission.
     

  6.  
  7. To be sure the converter is properly installed, measure the distance between the torque converter mounting lugs and the front mounting face of the transmission. The proper distance is 0.71 in. (18mm) for the A340H transmission or 0.79 in. (20mm) for the A340D, A340E and A340F transmissions.
  8.  
  9. For A340D transmissions, install guide pins into 2 opposite mounting lugs of the torque converter.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
     
    Torque converter bolts, by rotating the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts evenly to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) for the A340H, A3430D and A340E transmissions or to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) for the A340F transmission.
     
    Torque converter access cover
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the wood block(s) from under the engine oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission crossmember. Tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Rear mount and bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) and the bracket-to-rear mount bolts to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Transmission onto the crossmember. Tighten the transmission-to-mount bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     

  16.  
  17. Remove the wooden blocks from between the frame and the engine and the support from under the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Install or connect the following:

    Front differential, for the A340H transmission. Tighten the 2 rear mount bolts to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm) and the front mount through-bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).

NOTE
If the differential oil was drained, refill it at this time.



Shift control rod and the transfer case shift lever
 
Front stabilizer bar, if applicable
 
Cross-shaft and the No. 2 shifting rod, if applicable
 
Stiffener plates. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
 
Transfer case undercover and the dynamic damper, if equipped. Tighten the dynamic damper mount bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
 
No. 2 cross-shaft bracket
 
Oil filler tube and the oil cooler pipe bracket
 
Oil cooler lines to the transmission. Tighten the fittings to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
 
Front exhaust pipe and the support bracket
 
Speedometer cable
 
Front and rear driveshaft flanges with the differential pinion flanges, by aligning the matchmarks. Tighten the bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
 
Starter
 
Wiring connectors to the transmission and the transfer case, if applicable
 
Engine undercover
 
Transmission throttle cable, by adjusting it
 
Air cleaner assembly, if removed
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Refill the transmission and the transfer case, if applicable.
  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  
  5. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
  6.  
  7. Recheck all fluid levels.
  8.

  1. Remove the engine under-covers.

  29. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine bolts and remove the transmission.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear insulator.
  32.  
  33. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Rear insulator: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts (see illustration): 14mm head, 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm head, 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Loosen the two nuts and disconnect the throttle cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the throttle cable from cable clamps in the engine compartment.
  4.  
  5. Remove the automatic transmission dipstick.
  6.  
  7. Detach the oil filler pipe.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the bolt and oil filler pipe with O-ring.
  10.  
  11. Detach the two engine under covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the drive shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transmission control rod.
  18.  
  19. Detach the No. 1 vehicle speed sensor connector from the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Detach the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor connector from the transmission.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the solenoid wire connector from the transmission.
  24.  
  25. Detach the automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor connector from the transmission.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector from the transmission.
  28.  
  29. Separate the wire harness from the transmission.
  30.  
  31. Remove the three bolts and oil cooler pipe clamps.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the two oil cooler pipes.
  34.  
  35. Remove rear end plate and torque converter clutch mounting bolt.
  36.  
  37. Remove the four bolts and rear end plate.
  38.  
  39. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the six bolts with holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt by a wrench.
  40.  
  41. Using a transmission jack, support the transmission.
  42.  
  43. Remove No. 3 crossmember by performing the following steps:
    1. Remove the four set-bolts of the engine rear mounting.
    2.  
    3. Remove the four bolts, nuts and No. 3 crossmember.
    4.  

  44.  
  45. Remove engine rear mounting by detaching the four bolts and engine rear mounting from the transmission.
  46.  
  47. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire and connector.
  48.  
  49. Remove the two bolts and starter.
  50.  
  51. Remove the six mounting bolts and slowly lower the transmission assembly from the vehicle.
  52.  

To install:

  1. Check torque converter clutch installation.
  2.  
  3. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the distance from the installed surface of the transmission housing to the installed surface of the torque converter clutch. The distance should be more than 0.7067 in. (7.95mm)
  4.  
  5. Installation is in the reverse order of removal
    NOTE
    After installation, adjust the shift lever position and throttle cable

  6.  
  7. Fill and check fluid levels.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Throttle cable, from the engine compartment
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) dipstick
     
    Oil filler pipe
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission shift lever assembly and transfer shift lever, as follows:

    Rear console upper panel, by disconnecting the connectors
     
    Heater control knobs
     
    Center cluster finish panel, by disconnecting the connectors
     
    Transfer shift lever knob, without the 2-4 selector
     
    Bolt and the transfer shift lever knob, with the 2-4 selector
     
    Front console upper panel
     
    2-4 selector connector, if equipped
     
    Transfer shift lever knob
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Transmission shift lever assembly connector and the 8 screws
     
    Shift lever snapring, using pliers and pull out it from the transfer case
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front and rear driveshafts
     
    Exhaust pipe
     

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the following connectors from the transmission:

    No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Solenoid connector
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature sensor connector
     
    Park/neutral position switch connector
     

  8.  
  9. Detach the following connectors from the transfer case:

    Transfer neutral position switch connector
     
    Transfer L4 position switch connector
     
    Transfer 4WD position switch connector
     
    Actuator connector (2-4 selector only)
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wiring harness from the transmission and the transfer case
     
    Both oil cooler pipes
     
    Rear end-plate and torque converter clutch mounting bolt
     

  12.  
  13. Support the transmission with a jackstand.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine rear mount bolts
     
    4 bolts and the crossmember
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission
     

  16.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
     
    Starter. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Crossmember. Tighten the 4 bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount. Tighten the 4 bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Clutch converter bolts, by installing the green colored bolt before the other 5. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Rear end-plate. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Both oil cooler pipes. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Oil cooler pipe clamps. Tighten the 10mm head bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm) and the 12mm head bolt to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Wiring harness to the transmission and the transfer case
     
    Remaining components

  3. Fill the transmission and transfer case with transmission fluid.

    Throttle cable
     
    Negative battery cable

  39. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Rear insulator: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts (see illustration): 14mm head, 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm head, 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Loosen the two nuts and disconnect the throttle cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the throttle cable from cable clamps in the engine compartment.
  4.  
  5. Remove Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) dipstick.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt and oil filler pipe with O-ring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screw and disconnect the transfer shift lever knob.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front console upper panel.
  12.  
  13. Detach the 2-4 selector connector and remove the transfer shift lever knob.
  14.  
  15. Detach the two clips, screws and front console box.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut and washer and disconnect the shift control rod.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the connector and remove the eight bolts and transmission shift lever assembly.
  20.  
  21. Using pliers, remove the snap ring and pull out the transfer shift lever from the transfer case.
  22.  
  23. Remove two engine under covers.
  24.  
  25. Detach front and rear drive shaft.
  26.  
  27. Remove front exhaust pipe.
  28.  
  29. Detach No. 2 vehicle speed sensor connector from transmission.
  30.  
  31. Detach the solenoid connector from transmission.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature sensor connector from transmission.
  34.  
  35. Detach the park/neutral position switch connector from transmission.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the transfer neutral position switch connector from the transfer case.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the transfer 4WD position switch connector from the transfer case.
  40.  
  41. On models with a 2-4 selector, disconnect actuator connector from transfer case.
  42.  
  43. Separate wire harness from transmission and transfer case.
  44.  
  45. Remove the three bolts and oil cooler pipe clamps.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the two oil cooler pipes.
  48.  
  49. Remove the four bolts and rear end plate.
  50.  
  51. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the six bolts with holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt by a wrench.
  52.  
  53. Remove No. 3 crossmember
  54.  
  55. Support the transmission rear side with a support suitable jack or stand.
  56.  
  57. Remove the four set bolts of the engine rear mounting.
  58.  
  59. Remove the four bolts and nuts, and then remove the No. 3 crossmember.
  60.  
  61. Remove the four bolts and engine rear mounting from the transmission.
  62.  
  63. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  64.  
  65. Remove a support stand from the transmission rear side.
  66.  
  67. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire and connector.
  68.  
  69. Remove the two bolts and starter.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect the stabilizer bar. Then, remove the six bolts and slowly lower the transmission assembly.
  72.  

To install:

  1. Check torque converter clutch installation.
  2.  
  3. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the distance from the installed surface of the transmission housing to the installed surface of the torque converter clutch. The correct distance should be more than 0.7067 in. (17.95mm)
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission in the reverse order of removal.
    NOTE
    After installation, adjust the shift lever position and throttle cable.

  6.  
  7. Fill and check fluid level.
  8.

  1. Remove the engine under-covers.

  27. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Rear insulator: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts (see illustration): 14mm head, 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm head, 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)

  1. Remove the engine under-covers.
  2.  
  3. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front and rear driveshafts.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front crossmember brackets.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission cooler lines.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission control cable and bracket.
  14.  
  15. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Remove the skid plate.
  20.  
  21. Tilt the transmission downward, slightly and disconnect the wiring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bellhousing cover plate and turn the crankshaft to access and remove the 6 torque converter bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 10 transmission-to-engine bolts and remove the transmission.
  26.  
  27. Separate the transfer case from the transmission.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear insulator.
  30.  
  31. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Rear insulator: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts (see illustration): 14mm head, 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm head, 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)
