Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



1gr-FE Engine

The 4.0L (1GR-FE) Engine uses an oil seal in the timing chain cover. For additional information, see the following topic: -Timing Chain Cover and Seal, Removal & Installation-.

2uz-FE Engine
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, see the following topic: -Timing Belt and Sprockets, Removal & Installation-.
  4.  
  5. Using Special Tool 09950-50013 or an equivalent puller, remove the crankshaft sprocket.

  7. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip. Then using a suitable pry tool, pry out the front crankshaft seal.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Apply multipurpose grease to a new oil seal lip. Using Special Tool 09316-60011 or equivalent seal installer and a hammer, tap in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump body edge.
  2.  
  3. Align the crankshaft set key with the key groove of the crankshaft sprocket. Using Special Tool 09223-46011 or equivalent driver, tap the crankshaft pulley into place, facing the flange inward. Install the new crankshaft seal with the proper sized driver (top) and tap the crankshaft sprocket into place (bottom)-4.7L (2UZ-FE) Engine
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

5vz-FE Engine

There are two methods in which the seal may be replaced. One is with the oil pump body still installed and one is with the oil pump body removed.

Oil Pump Body Installed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt and crankshaft pulley
     
    Cut off the oil seal lip, using a knife
     
    Pry out the oil seal, using a suitable tool
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip
     
    Tap in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump case edge, using Seal Driver tool 09309-37010 and a mallet
     
    Crankshaft pulley and the timing belt
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Remove the timing belt and crankshaft pulley.
  2.  
  3. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  4.  
  5. Pry out the oil seal, using a suitable pry tool.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip
     
    Tap in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump case edge, using Seal Driver tool 09309-37010 and a mallet
     
    Crankshaft pulley and the timing belt
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

Oil Pump Body Removed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Carefully pry out the seal using a suitable tool.
  4.  
  5. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Using Seal Driver tool 09309-37010, drive the new seal into place.
  8.  

  1. Remove the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Carefully pry out the seal from the oil pump housing a suitable tool.
  4.  
  5. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Using Seal Driver tool 09309-37010, drive the new seal into place.
