Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Pry up the bushing flange, using a chisel and a hammer.
  6.  
  7. Using tools 09613-26010, 09613-20060 and 09950-00020 and a shop press, remove the bushing.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Using tools 09223-00010, 09506-35010 and a shop press, press the new bushing into the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper control arm to the chassis.
  4.  
  5. Check and/or adjust the alignment.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the shock and coil spring assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the upper ball joint as follows:
    1. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the nut.
    2.  
    3. Using a ball joint separator, disconnect the upper ball joint from the control arm.
    4.  
    5. Support the steering knuckle securely.
    6.  
    7. Remove the nut.
    8.

  7. Detach the control arm, by removing the nut, bolt, washers and lowering the arm.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Attach the upper control arm with the washer, bolt and nut. Make sure the arm is stabilized, then tighten the nut to 87 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the upper ball joint to the control arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 80 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Attach the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp; tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the shock and coil spring assembly.
  8.  
  9. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  10.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel and front brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the upper control arm nut.
  10.  
  11. Using a ball joint separator, disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Detach the control arm, by removing the nut, bolt, washers and lowering the arm.
  14.  

To install:

Fig. Fully tighten the upper control arm mounting nuts after the suspension has been stabilized

  1. Attach the upper control arm with the washers, bolts and nuts. Make sure the arm is stabilized, but do not tighten at this time.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the new nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Attach the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp; tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front brake disc and front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle to stabilize the suspension.
  10.  
  11. Fully tighten the upper control arm mounting nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  14.
