Removal & Installation



1MZ-FE And 3MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Oil pan protector
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Coolant
     
    Battery clamp cover
     
    Air cleaner inlet
     
    Lower radiator air deflector
     
    RF wheel
     
    V bank cover by removing the bolt and 2 cap nuts
     
    Air cleaner and intake air connector assembly
     
    Emission control valve
     
    Air intake surge tank
     
    Drive belt, fluid coupling and the fan pulley. The drive belt tension may be slackened by turning the tensioner counterclockwise. The pulley bolt for the drive belt tensioner has a left-handed thread.
     
    PS pump drive belt
     
    Radiator

  7. Remove intake manifold
  8.  
  9. Remove timing belt
  10.  
  11. Remove PS pump assembly
  12.  
  13. Front and rear exhaust pipe and brackets
  14.  
  15. Remove camshafts
  16.  
  17. Remove LH or RH cylinder head assemblies
  18.  
  19. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Head warpage or cracking could result from removing the bolts in an incorrect order.



    The VVT Sensor connector
     
    Camshaft timing oil valve connector
     
    Engine wire harness clamp
     
    Remove the hex bolt
     
    8 cylinder head bolts uniformly in the sequence

  21. Inspect the cylinder head set bolts. Ensure they match the following:

    Outside diameter is .3524 to .3563 in. (8.95 to 9.05mm)
     
    Minimum diameter is .3445 in. (8.75mm)

  23. If diameter is lees than minimum, replace the bolts.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install new head gasket with R mark upward
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head assembly
    NOTE
    Cylinder head bolts are tightened in two successive steps. Install and tighten 8 cylinder head bolts in required sequence.



    Apply light oil to the cylinder head bolts
     
    Install plate washers on the cylinder head bolts
     

    1. Tighten to 40 ft. lbs (54 Nm)

    3. Mark the front side of each head bolt with paint.

    5. Retighten cylinder head bolts 90 degrees in the same sequence
    6.  
    7. Check that each painted mark is now at a 90 degree angle to the front
    8.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tighten the hex bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Wiring harness clamp
     
    Camshaft timing oil valve connector
     
    Camshaft assemblies
     
    Valve cover assemblies
     
    Exhaust manifold assemblies and support brackets. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Exhaust manifold heat insulators
     
    PS pump assembly
     
    Timing belt inner cover
     
    Camshaft timing pulleys
     
    Timing belt and idler assemblies
     
    RH engine mounting bracket
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Alternator bracket
     
    Engine mounting stay No 2
     
    Engine stabilizer rod
     
    PS drive belt
     
    A/C compressor drive belt
     
    Water outlet
     
    Intake manifold assembly
     
    Intake air surge tank
     
    Emission control valve set
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    V-bank cover sub-assembly
     
    Front suspension upper brace
     
    RF wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

1MZ-FE Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     

  8.  


NOTE
On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding after disconnecting the negative battery cable.



Accelerator cable and the throttle cable on vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle.
 
Air cleaner cover, air flow meter, air duct, cruise control actuator and bracket (if equipped), the 2 engine ground straps, right engine mounting support, radiator hoses, and 2 heater hoses
 
Fuel feed and return lines and plug the lines
 
Pressure hose, plug, and remove from V-bank cover
 
Vacuum hoses from: Fuel pressure VSV; Fuel pressure regulator; Cylinder head rear plate; Intake air control valve VSV; EGR vacuum modulator; EGR valve
 
All necessary connectors and hoses
 
Ground straps and the hydraulic motor pressure hose
 
2 nuts and the power steering pressure tube
 
Engine hanger and the intake chamber support
 
Ignition coils and the spark plugs, timing belt, camshaft pulleys and the timing belt rear cover, cylinder head rear plate, water inlet pipe, and water outlet

2 (1 on each head) 8mm recessed hex bolts. Loosen and remove the 8 head bolts evenly, in 3 passes, in the reverse order of the installation sequence

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New cylinder head gasket on cylinder block. Place the cylinder head onto the gasket.
     
    Cylinder head bolts into the cylinder head. Bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), then an additional 90 degrees
     
    2 remaining 8mm bolts. Bolts: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Camshafts following the proper sequences and procedures
     
    Check and adjust the valves
     
    Sealant to the cylinder heads where the camshaft supports meet the cylinder heads
     
    All remaining components in reverse of removal using the diagrams for the proper torque figure.

2AZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     

  8.  


NOTE
On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding after disconnecting the negative battery cable.

WARNING
Head warpage or cracking could result from removing the bolts in an incorrect order.

  1. Inspect the cylinder head set bolts. They should be 6.350-6.465 in. (161.3-164.2mm) in length. If length is greater than maximum, replace the bolts.

To install:

  1. Install new head gasket
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head assembly

    Apply light oil to the cylinder head bolts
     
    Install plate washers on the cylinder head bolts

NOTE
Cylinder head bolts are tightened in two successive steps. Install and tighten 10 cylinder head bolts in required sequence.

  1. Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (79 Nm)
  2.

  5. Retighten cylinder head bolts 90 degrees in the same sequence
  6.  
  7. Check that each painted mark is now at a 90 degree angle to the front
  8.  

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft oil control valve assembly
     
    Camshaft bearing No. 2
     
    Camshafts
     
    Timing chain
     
    Exhaust manifold assembly
     
    Intake and exhaust manifold insulators
     
    Engine harness
     
    Intake manifold runner valve assembly
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Fuel tube assembly
     
    Heater inlet hose
     
    Union to connector tube hose
     
    Radiator hose outlet
     
    Fill engine oil
     
    Fill engine coolant
     

  2.  
  3. Inspect for fuel leaks
  4.  
  5. Inspect for oil leaks
  6.  
  7. Inspect for exhaust leaks
  8.  

2gr-FE Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine/transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head and camshaft housing. Use protective tape over the pry tool.



    Timing chain
     
    Timing chain vibration damper
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Water outlet pipe
     
    Camshafts
     
    Camshaft housing

    Rocker arms
     
    Valve lash adjusters

  12.  
  13. Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in several steps in the sequence shown.
  14.  
  15. Remove the head bolts and plate washers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cylinder head and gasket.

To install:

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket with the Lot number stamp upper side facing upward.

  3. Install the cylinder head. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Plus 90 degrees
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Plus an additional 90 degrees

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Valve stem cap
     
    Valve lash adjusters
     
    Rocker arms
     

  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft housing as follows:
    1. Apply 0.138-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5 mm) wide bead of sealant to the contact surface.
    2.  
    3. Install the camshaft housing and tighten the bolts in sequence to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
     
    Water outlet pipe. Tighten bolts to 7.4 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold. Tighten bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Timing chain vibration damper
     
    Timing chain
     

  10.  
  11. Install the engine/transaxle assembly to the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  14.  
  15. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  16.  
  17. Start then engine and check for leaks.
  18.
