Removal & Installation



1MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Alternator drive belt
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Power steering pump drive belt and adjusting strut
     
    Timing belt and belt pulleys
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    A/C compressor housing bracket
     
    No. 2 oil pan, oil strainer, No.1 oil pan and baffle plate
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    9 oil pump bolts. Make a note of the position of the each bolt.
     
    Oil pump body by prying between the oil pump and main bearing cap
     
    O-ring from the cylinder block
     
    Plug, gasket, spring, and relief valve from the oil pump body
     
    9 screws, pump body cover, drive, and driven rotors
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover
     
    9 screws
     
    Oil pump relief valve, spring, gasket, and the plug to the oil pump body
     
    New O-ring on the cylinder block
     
    Liquid sealant to the oil pump and engine block
     
    Oil pump to the engine block
     
    Bolts, uniformly tightened in several passes: 10mm head: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm). 12mm head: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft position sensor. Bolt: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Baffle plate to the No. oil pan. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 1 oil pan, oil strainer and No. 2 oil pan.
     
    A/C compressor housing bracket. Bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Rear timing belt cover. Bolts: 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Timing belt pulleys
     
    Timing belt
     
    Adjusting strut and power steering drive belt. Bolt and nut: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Alternator drive belt
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Undercover
     
    Right fender apron seal
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  6.  

2az-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right-side front wheel
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Right-side fender apron seal
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine moving control rod and bracket
     
    Right-side engine mounting stay and bracket
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Engine wire
     
    Alternator
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Ventilation hoses from the cylinder head cover
     
    Cylinder head cover
     

  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower oil pan
     
    Chain tensioner
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     

  10.  
  11. Support the engine with a suitable lifting device.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine mounts
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing chain
     
    Oil pump drive shaft gear
     
    Oil pump and gasket
     

  14.  
  15. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).

3MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     

  4.  
  5. Oil pump assembly
    1. 9 bolts
    2.  
    3. Remove oil pump by prying between the oil pump and bearing cap
    4.  
    5. Remove the oil ring

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump seal using proper driver.
    1. Tap in the seal until it is flush with the oil pump body
    2.  
    3. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
    4.

  3. Install oil pump assembly.
    1. Remove any old sealant from the mating surfaces
    2.  
    3. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the O-ring, then place it on the engine block.
    4.  
    5. Thoroughly clean the mating surface of any oil or old sealant
    6.  
    7. Apply a continuous bead of sealant on the oil pump body, making certain to surround the bolt holes.
    8.  
    9. Install the oil pump within 3 minutes after applying the sealant.
      NOTE
      Do NOT expose the sealant to engine oil within 2 hours after installing

    10.  
    11. Align the key of the oil pump drive gear with the keyway located on the crankshaft, then slide the oil pump into place.
    12.  
    13. Install the oil pump with the 9 bolts. Tighten the bolts uniformly in several steps. Torque to: Bolt A 71 in. lbs (8.0 Nm), Bolt B 14 ft lbs. (20 Nm), Bolt C 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)

  5. Install crankshaft position sensor

  7. Install oil pans using oil pan installation procedure
  8.  

5S-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Hood
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Rear end stiffener plate
     
    Oil dipstick and oil pan
     
    Oil strainer and gasket
     
    Timing belt and pulleys
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Oil pump and gasket
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The long bolts are 1.38 in. (35mm) and all the others are 0.98 in. (25mm).


    NOTE
    The pan must be installed within 5 minutes of sealant application or the procedure will have to be repeated.



    Oil pump with new gasket. Bolts: 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     



    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Timing belt and pulleys
     
    Oil strainer with new gasket. Tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
     
    Oil pan and dipstick
     



    Rear end stiffener plate. Bolts: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.
