Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



1MZ-FE Engine
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Clutch cover assembly and flywheel or driveplate
     
    Remove the rear end plate.

    Oil seal retainer and gasket. Discard the gasket or sealant.

  3. Use a small prybar to pry the oil seal from the retaining plate. Be careful not to damage the plate.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the retainer contact surfaces thoroughly and lubricate the new oil seal with multi-purpose grease.
  2.  
  3. Drive the oil seal into the retainer until its surface is flush with the edge of the retainer. Make sure that the seal is installed evenly in the retainer to ensure proper sealing.
  4.  
  5. Apply a18
  6.  
  7. Install the rear end plate.
  8.  
  9. On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, install the driveplate.
  10.  
  11. On manual transaxle equipped vehicles, install the clutch disc and clutch cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the transaxle.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Clutch cover assembly and flywheel or driveplate
     
    Remove the rear end plate.

    Oil seal retainer and gasket. Discard the gasket or sealant.

  3. Use a small prybar to pry the oil seal from the retaining plate. Be careful not to damage the plate.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the retainer contact surfaces thoroughly and lubricate the new oil seal with multi-purpose grease.
  2.  
  3. Drive the oil seal into the retainer until its surface is flush with the edge of the retainer. Make sure that the seal is installed evenly in the retainer to ensure proper sealing.
  4.  
  5. Apply a 1 / 8 inch bead of sealant to the oil seal retainer. Install the retainer and install the dust seal. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

  7. Install the rear end plate.
  8.  
  9. On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, install the driveplate.
  10.  
  11. On manual transaxle equipped vehicles, install the clutch disc and clutch cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the transaxle.
  14.  

2gr-FE Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Driveplate
     

  4.  
  5. Cut off the oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable pry tool, pry out the oil seal.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Tap a new oil seal using Special Tool 09223-15030 until the seal is +/- 0.020 in. (0.5mm) of the surface of the oil seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Install the driveplate.
  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle.

5S-FE, 1ZZ-FE, 2ZZ-GE & 1NZ-FE Engines
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Clutch assembly
     
    Flywheel or flexplate
     

  2.  
  3. Use a small sharp knife to cut off the lip of the oil seal. Take great care not to score any metal with the knife.
  4.  
  5. Use a small prytool to pry the old seal from the retaining plate. Be careful not to damage the plate. Protect the tip of the tool with tape and pad the fulcrum point with cloth.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the crankshaft and seal lip contact surfaces for any sign of damage.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply a light coat of multi-purpose grease to the lip of a new oil seal. Loosely fit the seal into place by hand, making sure it is not crooked.
  2.  
  3. Use a seal driver of the correct size to install the seal. Tap it into place until the surface of the seal is flush with the edge of the housing.
  4.
