Transaxle Removal & Installation


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
    Air cleaner
    With cruise control, cruise control actuator
    Clutch release cylinder and tube clamp
    Back-up light switch connector and ground strap
    Wires clamp
    Clips and washers that attach the transaxle control cables to the control levers
    Transaxle control cables.
    Speed sensor connector
    Left and right halfshafts
    4 steering gear housing bolts.
    Stabilizer bar bushing bracket
    2 set bolts and nuts
    Steering gear box from the suspension member and suspend it securely
    Exhaust pipe
    Stiffener plate
    Engine front mounting from the suspension member
    Engine rear mounting from the front suspension member
    Left engine mounting
    Steering cooler pipe from the suspension member
    2 fender liner set screws
    The 2 bolts and 4 nuts located on the outside of the suspension member brackets
    The 4 larger bolts holding the suspension member to the vehicle body
    The 2 front lower braces, rear braces, and the front suspension member.

To install:

  1. Move the transaxle into position so that the input shaft spline is aligned with the clutch disc.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle into the engine and secure with the lower mounting bolts. Bolts: 10mm mounting bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm). 12mm bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
    Front suspension member and the 2 front lower braces and rear lower braces. 4 large bolts that hold the suspension member to the vehicle: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm); 2 outside bolts and 4 outside nuts: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
    2 fender liner set screws
    Steering cooler pipe to the suspension member
    Engine left mount. Bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm); 2 nuts and 2 grommets. Nuts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Engine rear mounting to the front suspension member. Nuts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Engine front mounting to the suspension member. Bolt: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Stiffener plate. Bolts: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    Exhaust pipe
    Steering gear housing to the front suspension member. Bolts and nuts: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
    Stabilizer bar bushing bracket. 4 bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
    Right and left halfshafts
    Vehicle speed sensor
    Control cables by installing the washers and clips
    Clamp that retains the wires to the transaxle
    Back-up light switch connector and ground cables
    Starter. Bolts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    Pipe clamp and clutch release cylinder to the transaxle. Bolts: 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    Cruise control actuator
    Air cleaner
    Negative battery cable

  5. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level.
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
