To install:
  1. Position the new rotor disc onto the axle hub and reinstall the two wheel nuts temporarily.
  2.
  3. For the front rotor, install the torque plate onto the steering knuckle. On 1983-84 vehicles, tighten the plate bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm); 1985-86, 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm); 1987-91, 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm); 1992-96, 73 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  4.
  5. On rear brake rotors install the torque plate onto the steering knuckle, and tighten the plate bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6.
  7. Remove the wheel nuts and install the wheels. Secure the wheel lugs. Before moving the vehicle, make sure to pump the brake pedal to seat the brake pads against the rotors.

INSPECTION

Front

Examine the disc. If it is worn, warped or scored, it must be replaced. Check the thickness of the disc against the specifications given in the Disc and Pad Specifications chart. If it is below specifications, replace it. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness.

The disc run-out should be measured before the disc is removed and again, after the disc is installed. Use a dial indicator mounted on a magnet type stand (attached to the shock absorber shaft) to determine runout. Position the dial so the stylus is 0.394 inch (10mm) from the outer edge of the rotor disc. The maximum allowable runout on 1983-86 and 1989 vehicles is 0.0059 inch (0.15mm). The maximum allowable runout for 1987-88 vehicles is 0.0031 inch (0.08mm). The maximum allowable runout on 1990-91 vehicles is 0.0027 inch (0.07mm). The maximum allowable runout on 1992-96 vehicles is 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If runout exceeds the specification, replace the disc.

Be sure that the wheel bearing nut is properly tightened. If it is not, an inaccurate run-out reading may be obtained. If different run-out readings are obtained with the same disc, between removal and installation, this is probably the cause.
