Lower Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1983-86 Models
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Loosen and remove the two bolts attaching the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut that holds the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the lower control arm bolt.
  8.  
  9. Wiggle the stabilizer bar back and forth and pull out the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower control arm.
  12.  


CAUTION
Do not pull on the driveshaft!

  1. Remove the retainer and the spacer from the stabilizer bar.
  2.  
  3. Remove and install the ball joint, if necessary.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the spacer first and then the retainer.
  2.  
  3. Pass the lower arm through the stabilizer.
  4.  
  5. While pushing on the bar and having an assistant pry on the arm with a crescent wrench, temporarily install the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Install the retainer and finger tighten the stabilizer bar nut.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower arm to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to settle the suspension.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the stabilizer bar nut to 86 ft. lbs. (116 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lower control arm bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Have the front wheel alignment checked.
  20.  

1987 Models
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut holding the stabilizer bar to the lower arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut holding the lower arm shaft to the lower arm.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt and remove the lower suspension crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower arm shaft mounting nut and bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower arm with the lower arm shaft.
  16.  
  17. Remove and install the ball joint as necessary.
  18.  

To install:
  1. First insert the lower arm into the stabilizer bar, and then install the lower arm shaft into the body.
  2.  
  3. Temporarily install the lower arm nut and retainer.
  4.  
  5. Temporarily install the new stabilizer nut with the retainer to hold the stabilizer bar to the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Connect the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and tighten the two bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Temporarily install the lower arm shaft to the body.
  10.  
  11. Install the suspension lower cross member. Tighten the outside bolts to 153 ft. lbs. (207 Nm) and the inside bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to settle the suspension.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lower suspension arm nuts to 156 ft. lbs. (212 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Have the front wheel alignment checked.
  20.  

1988-91 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Remove the front wheels and the fender apron seal.
  2.

  1. Disconnect the lower arm from the steering knuckle, at the ball joint.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the lower arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crossmember and lower arm as an assembly. Remove the lower suspension with the lower suspension arm shaft.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the crossmember and lower arm assemblies. Loosely install the lower arm bushing bolts. Tighten the crossmember bolts to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ball joint bolts and tighten to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer nut loosely.
  6.  
  7. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle. Bounce up and down to stabilize the suspension. With the vehicle weight on the suspension, tighten the lower control arm bushing and stabilizer nuts to 156 ft. lbs. (212 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Align the front end.
  10.  

1992-96 Models

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Remove the front wheels and the fender apron seal.
  2.  
  3. While applying the front brakes, remove the drive shaft lock nut.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right stabilizer end brackets from the lower arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 nuts and one bolt to disconnect the lower arm from the ball joint.

  1. Remove the bolt and nut (with arm attached) from the rear of the arm.
  2.  

There is a nut with an arm attached to it to prevent nut rotation.

  1. Remove the pivot bolts from where it attaches to the subframe. Remove the spacer from the one pivot bolt. Maneuver the arm from its mounting area.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Slide the control arm into the rear biscuit then place the rest of the arm into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower arm bushing stopper to the lower arm shaft. Install the pivot bolt where they attach to the subframe and tighten to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolts on the rear biscuit of the control arm to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the lower arm to the lower ball joint and tighten the fasteners to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install both side stabilizer end brackets to the lower arm and tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Install the drive shaft lock nut and tighten to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Install front fender apron seal and the front wheel. Tighten the lugnuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
