REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1983-86 Models
  1. Remove the engine under covers.
  2.  
  3. On 1985-86 vehicles, remove the center support member as follows:
    1. Remove the two access hole covers from the center engine mounting member.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolts from the front and rear mountings.
    4.  
    5. Unbolt the center mounting member.
    6.

  5. Remove both stabilizer bar brackets from the body.
  6.  
  7. On one side, disconnect the lower stabilizer end from the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt and remove the lower control arm on the other side.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer bar, retainer and spacer.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the spacer first and then the retainer.
  2.  
  3. Make the nut finger tight.
  4.  
  5. Pry the bar forward and install the brackets. Tighten the bracket retaining bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower arm on one side and tighten the stabilizer bar nut to 86 ft. lbs. (116 Nm).
  8.  
  9. On 1985-86 vehicles, install the center support member as follows:
    1. Position the members and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the front and rear mountings and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the access covers.
    6.

  11. Install the engine under covers.
  12.  
  13. Have the front wheel alignment checked.
  14.  

1987-91 Models
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt and remove the suspension lower crossmember from the bottom of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nuts attaching the stabilizer bar to the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the control cable clamp from the engine center mounting member.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt and remove the center mounting member.
  12.  
  13. Withdraw the stabilizer bar from the lower suspension arms.
  14.  
  15. Note their position and remove the spacers and retainers from the bar.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the spacers and retainers onto the stabilizer bar in their original order.
  2.  
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar to the lower arms.
  4.  
  5. Install the retainers and temporarily install two new nuts onto the stabilizer bar. They will be tightened later.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer bar brackets with cushions. Tighten the retaining bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the engine center mounting member and tighten the outside bolts to 153 ft. lbs. (206 Nm) and the inside bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the suspension lower crossmember. Tighten the outside bolts to 153 ft. lbs. (207 Nm) and the inside bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Bounce the vehicle up and down a few times to stabilize the suspension.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the stabilizer bar nuts to 156 ft. lbs. (212 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Have the front wheel alignment checked.
  20.  

1992-96 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove both right and left side fender apron seals.
  4.

  1. Remove the cotter pin and the nut from both side tie rod end studs. Using puller, disconnect right and left tie rod ends from the steering knuckle
  2.  
  3. Remove stabilizer bar links (bolts) from each control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left bushing retainers and the bar bushings.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear box mounting bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Lift the steering gear box and remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Lift the steering gear box and install bar into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering gear box mounting bolts and nuts and tighten to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  6.  
  7. Install the left and the right stabilizer bar bushings, bushing retainers, and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the retainer bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install both side stabilizer bar links and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) on 1992-94 models and 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) on 1995-96 models.
  10.  
  11. Connect both side tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the left and the right fender apron seals and the front wheels.
  14.
