CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2S-ELC Engine
  1. On 1986 vehicles, drain the cooling system.
  2.

CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. On vehicles equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle linkage.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle linkage and remove the accelerator cable return spring.
  4.
  5. Remove the cable bracket from the throttle body.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the air cleaner hose.
  8.
  9. Disconnect and label the two water by-pass hoses, PCV throttle body hose, air inlet valve hose and all emission control vacuum hoses.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the throttle position sensor wiring.
  12.
  13. Remove the four bolts that secure the throttle body to the intake manifold.
  14.
  15. Lift the throttle body and gasket from the intake manifold and remove from the vehicle.
  16.
  17. Cover the intake manifold opening with masking tape to prevent the entry of foreign matter. Purchase a new gasket.
  18.
  19. Using a soft bristle brush and carburetor cleaner, clean all the throttle body cast parts. Using low pressure compressed air, clean all the ports and passages.
  20.
  21. Inspect and/or adjust the throttle valve and throttle position sensor as described in this Section. On 1987 vehicles, remove the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve if required also detailed in this Section.
  22.

To install:
  1. Install the ISC valve, if removed. Make sure that the gasket surface is clean and install the throttle body and gasket onto the intake manifold surface.
  2.
  3. Install the four retaining bolts and tighten them to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern.
  4.
  5. Connect the throttle position sensor harness.
  6.
  7. Connect all the throttle body hoses and vacuum lines to their respective ports and wiring.
  8.
  9. Connect the air cleaner hose.
  10.
  11. Install the throttle body cable bracket.
  12.
  13. Install the accelerator cable return spring and connect the accelerator cable to the throttle linkage.
  14.
  15. If equipped with automatic transaxle, connect the throttle cable linkage.
  16.
  17. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a good brand of ethylene glycol coolant.
  18.
