3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines
  1. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is above 199° F (93°) C.
  4.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is below 181° F (83°) C.
  2.  
  3. If resistance does not respond as specified, the sending unit is faulty.

1MZ-FE Engine

NO. 1 SWITCH

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is above 208° F (98°) C.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is below 190° F (88°) C.

  3. If resistance does not respond as specified, the sending unit is faulty.

NO. 2 SWITCH

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is above 199° F (93° C.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between the terminals when the coolant temperature is below 181° F (83° C.
  2.  
  3. If resistance does not respond as specified, the sending unit is faulty.

2VZ-FE Engine

See Figure 5

  1. Remove the switch from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals.
  4.

Approximately 1.53 kilo ohms at 176°F (80°) C
 
Approximately 1.18 kilo ohms at 194°F (90°) C
 
Approximately 1.03 kilo ohms at 203°F (95°) C
 

  1. If the continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.
  2.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the switch electrical wiring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the switch from the thermostat housing.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Coat the new sending unit with Teflon tape or electrically conductive sealer.
  2.  
  3. Place a new O-ring on the end of the unit. Install the sending unit and tighten securely.
  4.  
  5. Attach the sending unit's electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with coolant.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature and check for leaks.
  10.  
  11. Check for proper sending unit operation.
  12.
