Camshaft Position Sensor

OPERATION

The ECM uses the camshaft signal to determine the position of the No. 1 cylinder piston during its power stroke. The signal is used by the ECM to calculate fuel injection mode of operation.

If the cam signal is lost while the engine is running, the fuel injection system will shift to a calculated fuel injected mode based on the last fuel injection pulse, and the engine will continue to run.

TESTING
  1. Check voltage between the camshaft position sensor terminals.
  2.  
  3. With engine running, voltage should be greater than 0.1 volt AC and vary with engine speed.
  4.  
  5. If voltage is not within specification, the sensor may be faulty.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wiring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 bolts and the sensor from the vehicle.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Attach the sensor to the engine and secure the retaining bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the wiring to the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Reset any electrical components such as the radio or clock.
