The Throttle Position (TP) sensor measures how far the throttle valve is open. Used in conjunction with the MAP or MAF sensors, it helps determine engine load.

TESTING

  1. Detach the sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Detach the vacuum hose from the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Apply a vacuum to the throttle opener assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using and ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals and compare it to the accompanying chart.
  8.  
  9. If the values are not within specification, replace the sensor.
  10.  
  11. Reattach the vacuum hose to the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the throttle position sensor connector.
  14.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Detach the sensor wiring harness.
  2.  
  3. Remove the mounting screws and extract the sensor.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Make certain the throttle plate is fully closed. With the throttle body held in its normal orientation, place the sensor onto the throttle body so that the electrical connector is in the correct position.
  2.  
  3. Temporarily install the retaining screws for the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the throttle position sensor.
  6.  

ADJUSTMENT
5S-FE Engine
  1. Loosen the sensor screws. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.024 inch (0.060mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever.
  4.  
  5. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects and then tighten the screws.
  8.  
  9. Using a 0.020 inch (0.050mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop and lever, verify with an ohmmeter that there is continuity.
  10.  
  11. Using a 0.030 inch (0.070mm) feeler gage between the throttle stop screw and lever, verify with an ohmmeter that there is not continuity.
  12.  
  13. If non of the test is as specified, replace the sensor.
  14.  

1MZ-FE Engine

  1. Loosen the sensor screws. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.021 inch (0.054mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever.
  4.  
  5. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects and then tighten the screws.
  8.  
  9. Using a 0.014 inch (0.035mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop and lever, verify with an ohmmeter that there is continuity.
  10.  
  11. Using a 0.030 inch (0.070mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever, verify with an ohmmeter that there is not continuity.
