Balance Shaft

Print

On the 5S-FE there are two balance shafts located beneath the engine crankshaft. To gain access to the balance shafts you must remove the oil pan. The 1MZ-FE engine has no balance shafts.

  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2.
  3. Detach the oil pan strainer.
  4.
  5. To inspect the backlash of crankshaft gear and No.1 balance shaft gear you must first turn the crankshaft two (2) or three (3) times. This will settle the crankshaft gear and the No.1 balance shaft gear assembly.
  6.
  7. Position the No.1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC), then check that the punch marks on the balance shafts are aligned with the groves on the No.2 housing.
  8.
  9. Inspect the punch marks A and B are at the positions on the No.1 balance shafts.
  10.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, then align the groove of the No.2 balance shaft housing with the mark on the No.1 balance shaft.
  12.
  13. Align a dial indicator to measure the backlash of the balance shafts. See the above diagram.
  14.
  15. Lightly rotate the balance shaft until resistance is felt.
  16.
  17. Measure the backlash. The backlash should measure 0.0010-0.0026 in. (0.025-0.065mm).
  18.
  19. Remove the dial indicator.
  20.
  21. Align the groove of the No.2 housing with the punch mark labeled A in the above diagram.
  22.
  23. Set up the dial indicator.
  24.
  25. Measure the backlash. The backlash should measure 0.0010-0.0033 in. (0.025-0.085mm).
  26.
  27. Remove the dial indicator.
  28.
  29. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise again to align the groove of the No.2 housing with the punch mark B.
  30.
  31. Set the dial indicator.
  32.
  33. Measure the backlash. The backlash should measure 0.0010-0.0033 in. (0.025-0.085mm).
  34.
  35. Remove the dial indicator.
  36.
  37. If any one of the backlash measurements exceeds the specifications, adjust the backlash with new spacers.

  1. Uniformly loosen the six (6) bolts in the sequence shown.
  2.
  3. Replace the spacers with new ones.
  4.
  5. Tighten the balance shaft assembly.
  6.
  7. Adjust the backlash of crankshaft gear and No.1 balance shaft gear.
