  1. Remove all necessary components to gain access to the cylinder head using the diagram above.
  2.

NOTE
On California vehicles, remove the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) for fuel pressure control and EGR. On all vehicles (except California), remove the VSV for EGR.

  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2.

NOTE
Support the timing belt, so that the meshing of the crankshaft timing pulley and the timing belt does not shift. Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing belt cover.

  1. Remove the engine hangers and the alternator bracket.
  2.
  3. Remove the camshafts following the proper sequences and procedures.
  4.
  5. Uniformly loosen and remove the cylinder head bolts in several passes and in the reverse order of the installation sequence. Lift the cylinder head from the cylinder block disengaging the cylinder head from the block dowel pins.

Fig. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown-2.2L (5S-FE) engine

  1. The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the cylinder head bolts. Uniformly tighten the 10 cylinder head bolts in several passes and in sequence to 36 ft. lbs. Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt with paint. Tighten the cylinder head bolts by 90° in sequence. Tighten an additional 90° and be sure that the paint mark is now positioned toward the rear.
  2.
  3. Install the camshafts and all other components following the proper sequences and procedures.
  4.
  5. Check and adjust valve clearance.
  6.
  7. Install sealant to the 2 new semi-circular seals and install the seals to the cylinder head.
  8.
  9. Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket, the 4 grommets and nuts and uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes. Tighten the nuts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  10.

3.0L (1MZ-FE) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.
  3. Drain all necessary engine fluids.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the accelerator cable and the throttle cable on vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle.
  6.
  7. Remove the air cleaner cover, air flow meter, air duct, cruise control actuator and bracket (if equipped), the 2 engine ground straps, right engine mounting support, radiator hoses, and 2 heater hoses.
  8.
  9. Disconnect and plug the fuel feed and return lines from the fuel rail assembly.
  10.
  11. Disconnect and plug the pressure hose from the hydraulic motor.
  12.
  13. Remove the V-bank cover.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the following vacuum hoses:
  16.
    1. Fuel pressure control Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV), fuel pressure regulator, cylinder head rear plate, intake air control valve VSV, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vacuum modulator, and EGR valve.
    2.

  17. Disconnect all necessary connectors and hoses.
  18.
  19. Remove the 2 ground straps and the hydraulic motor pressure hose from the intake chamber.
  20.
  21. Remove the 2 nuts and the power steering pressure tube from the intake chamber.
  22.
  23. Remove the engine hanger and the intake chamber support.
  24.
  25. Remove the ignition coils and the spark plugs, timing belt, camshaft pulleys and the timing belt rear cover, cylinder head rear plate, water inlet pipe, and water outlet.
  26.
  27. Remove the intake manifold and fuel rail assembly.
  28.
  29. Remove the EGR pipe from the right exhaust manifold.
  30.
  31. Remove the exhaust manifolds.
  32.
  33. Remove the dipstick assembly and the power steering pump bracket.
  34.
  35. Remove the valve covers and the camshaft position sensor.
  36.
  37. Remove the camshafts following the proper sequences and procedures.
  38.
  39. Remove the 2 (1 on each head) 8mm recessed hex bolts. Loosen and remove the 8 head bolts evenly, in 3 passes, in the reverse order of the installation sequence.
  40.
  41. Remove the cylinder head gasket. With a gasket scraper, carefully remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and engine block surfaces.

To install:

  1. Place the new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder block. Place the cylinder head onto the gasket.
  2.
  3. Coat the threads with clean engine oil and install the bolts into the cylinder head. Tighten the bolts in sequence in 3 steps to an ultimate torque of 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), using the proper sequence.
  4.
  5. Tighten each bolt, in proper sequence, then an additional 90 degrees.
  6.
  7. Coat the threads of the 2 remaining 8mm bolts with engine oil and install them. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the camshafts following the proper sequences and procedures.
  10.
  11. Check and adjust the valves.
  12.
  13. Apply sealant to the cylinder heads where the camshaft supports meet the cylinder heads.
  14.
