REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

2.2L (5S-FE) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil and remove the engine undercovers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  8.  
  9. Safely support the engine assembly and remove the engine mounting center member.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear end stiffener plate.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil dipstick and remove the 17 bolts and 2 nuts attaching the oil pan to the engine.
  14.  
  15. Insert the blade of the SST 09032-00100 tool, or equivalent, between the oil pan and the cylinder block; cut off the applied sealer and remove the oil pan.
  16.  


NOTE
Do not use the tool for the oil pump body side and rear oil seal retainer.

To install:

  1. Remove any old sealant from the oil pan flange and thoroughly clean both sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 3-5mm bead of sealant to the oil pan flange.
  4.  


NOTE
The pan must be installed within 5 minutes of sealant application or the procedure will have to be repeated.

  1. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm) and install the oil dipstick.

Fig. You may need to purchase a Special Service Tool (SST) to slice the gasket on between the oil pan and the cylinder block. In most cases a utility knife is sufficient

  1. Install the rear end stiffener plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine mounting center member and safely lower the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with oil and connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Recheck the engine oil level and reinstall the engine undercovers.
  10.  

3.0L (1MZ-FE) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fender apron seal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine undercover.
  12.  
  13. Drain the engine oil from the engine.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan.
  18.  
  19. Remove the flywheel housing undercover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan.
  22.  
  23. Insert the blade of SST tool 09032-00100, or equivalent between the No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans. Clean the surfaces of the oil pans.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil strainer and gasket from the engine by removing the 3 nuts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the No.1 oil pan as follows:
  28.  
    1. Remove the 2 bolts to the flywheel housing undercover. Remove the flywheel undercover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 17 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 1 oil pan. Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pan, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.
    4.  
    5. Remove the oil pan by prying the portions between the cylinder block and the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces.
    6.  

  29. Remove the baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan.

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.
  2.  
  3. Install the baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 oil pan as follows:
  6.  
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the bolts as follows:

    9. 10mm head bolt-69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
    10.  
    11. 12mm head bolt-14 ft. lbs. (19.5 Nm)
    12.  
    13. 14mm head bolt-27 ft. lbs. (37.2 Nm)
    14.  
    15. Install the flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
    16.  

  7. Install the oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 oil pan as follows:
  10.  
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 2 oil pan with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
    6.  

  11. Install the flywheel housing undercover.
  12.  
  13. Install the front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front exhaust pipe as follows:
  16.  
    1. Temporarily install the 3 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe with the 2 bolts and 6 nuts.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 4 nuts holding the exhaust manifolds to the front exhaust pipe. Tighten the 4 nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the center exhaust pipe. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the support stay with the 2 bolts and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    10.  

  17. Install the engine undercover.
  18.  
  19. Install the right fender apron seal.
  20.  
  21. Install the right front wheel and lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Fill the engine with oil.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check for leaks.
