Lower Ball Joint

INSPECTION
  1. Make the front wheels straight and jack up the front of the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Place an 8 inch (203mm) wooden block under one front tire.
  4.  
  5. Slowly lower the jack until there is about half a load on the front coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Support the front of the vehicle with jackstands for safety.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that the front wheels are still straight and block them.
  10.  
  11. Move the lower suspension arm up and down and check that there is no vertical play in the joint.
  12.  
  13. If there is play in the joint, replace it.
  14.  
  15. Repeat the procedure for the other side.
  16.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove side fender apron seal.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub, from the vehicle. See appropriate procedure of this Section for aid in removing the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Pry the dust deflector from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin and the nut from the ball joint stud. Discard the old cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Using two armed puller tool, remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower ball joint onto the steering knuckle and tighten nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  2.  
  3. Using the appropriate driver, install new dust deflector. Align the holes for the ABS speed sensor in the dust deflector and steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering knuckle with axle hub onto the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the fender apron seal and the front wheels.
  8.  
  9. Check the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment.
  10.
