  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with cruise control, remove the cruise control actuator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clutch release cylinder and tube clamp.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector and ground strap.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wires clamp.
  16.  
  17. Remove the clips and washers that attach the transaxle control cables to the control levers. Remove the retaining clips and disconnect the transaxle control cables.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
  20.  
  21. Install a engine support fixture.
  22.  
  23. Tie the steering gear housing to the engine support fixture with a cord.
  24.  
  25. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  26.  
  27. Remove the engine undercovers and the front wheels.
  28.  
  29. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left and right halfshafts.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the steering gear housing from the front suspension member as follows:
  34.  
    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the stabilizer bar bushing bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 set bolts and nuts.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the steering gear box from the suspension member and suspend it securely.
    8.  

  35. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  36.  
  37. Remove the stiffener plate.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the engine front mounting from the suspension member by removing the 2 bolts.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the engine rear mounting from the front suspension member by removing the 2 grommets and the 3 nuts.
  42.  
  43. With a transaxle jack and block of wood, raise the transaxle and engine slightly and disconnect the left engine mounting.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the steering cooler pipe from the suspension member.
  46.  
  47. Remove the 2 fender liner set screws.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the front suspension member as follows:
  50.  
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 4 nuts located on the outside of the brackets.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 larger bolts holding the suspension member to the vehicle body.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 front lower braces, rear braces, and the front suspension member.

  1. Remove the 6 transaxle mounting bolts from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Lower the left side of the engine and remove the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Clean the mating surfaces of grease and dirt in preparation for reinstallation.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Move the transaxle into position so that the input shaft spline is aligned with the clutch disc.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle into the engine and secure with the lower mounting bolts. Tighten the 10mm mounting bolts to 47 ft. lbs. and 12mm bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the front suspension member to the vehicle and install the 2 front lower braces and rear lower braces. Install the 4 large bolts that hold the suspension member to the vehicle. Tighten the bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the 2 outside bolts and 4 outside nuts. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the 2 fender liner set screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the steering cooler pipe to the suspension member.
  12.  
  13. Raise the transaxle and engine slightly with a jack and wooden block.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine left mounting as follows:
  16.  
    1. Install the engine left mounting, then install the 3 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 nuts and 2 grommets. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    4.  

  17. Install the engine rear mounting to the front suspension member by installing the 3 nuts and 2 grommets. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the engine front mounting to the suspension member and install the nut and 2 bolts. Tighten the bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the stiffener plate and tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the exhaust pipe.
  24.  
  25. Install the steering gear housing to the front suspension member as follows:
  26.  
    1. Lower the steering gear housing onto the suspension member.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 set bolts and nuts. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the stabilizer bar bushing bracket.
    6.  
    7. Install the 4 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
    8.  

  27. Install the right and left halfshafts.
  28.  
  29. Install the engine undercovers.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Fill the transaxle with transaxle fluid.
  34.  
  35. Untie the steering gear housing from the engine support fixture.
  36.  
  37. Remove the engine support fixture from the vehicle.
  38.  
  39. Connect the vehicle speed sensor.
  40.  
  41. Connect the control cables by installing the washers and clips.
  42.  
  43. Connect the clamp that retains the wires to the transaxle.
  44.  
  45. Connect the back-up light switch connector and ground cables.
  46.  
  47. Install the starter to the vehicle and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Install the pipe clamp and clutch release cylinder to the transaxle. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  50.  
  51. Install the cruise control actuator.
  52.  
  53. Install the air cleaner case assembly.
  54.  
  55. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  56.
