    Toyota Camry and Avalon 1997-2000

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
    Pedal Operated Intermediate Cable

    NOTE
    This cable is only found on Avalon models.

    1. Remove the front seat assembly.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with a bench seat, remove the protector. If equipped with bucket seats, remove the center console.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the cable from the intermediate lever.
    6.  
    7. Remove the left inner kick panel to get to the parking brake pedal assembly.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the parking brake switch.
    10.  
    11. Remove the spring clip, then pull the clevis pin out and disconnect the cable from the pedal.
    12.  
    13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    14.  

    Lever Operated Intermediate Cable
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the parking brake lever console box.
    4.  
    5. Remove the retaining nut located on the top of the lever shaft.
    6.  
    7. From under the vehicle, disconnect the cable from the equalizer and extract the intermediate cable from the lever assembly. Remove the cable from the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Torque the cable retainer nut to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).

    Rear Cable
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Working from underneath the car, loosen the locknut on the parking brake cable equalizer.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake drum or rotor, as applicable.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rear brake shoe and disconnect the parking cable from the shoe.
    10.  
    11. Remove the rear cable from the equalizer assembly and remove the cable from the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    14.  

    ADJUSTMENT
    Lever Type

    NOTE
    Before making any adjustments, make sure the rear brake shoe clearance is correct and the automatic self-adjuster is properly adjusted.

    1. Pull the parking brake lever all the way up and count the number of clicks. The travel number should be 5-8 clicks. If not, perform the following steps.

    1. Remove the console box.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the locknut and adjust the adjusting nut until proper lever travel is obtained.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the locknut to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the console box.
    8.  

    Pedal Type
    1. Slowly press the parking brake pedal and count the number of clicks. The travel number should be between 3-6 clicks. If not, perform the following steps.

    1. Remove the hole cover, if a column shift. If a floor shift, remove the console box.
    2.  
    3. Make sure the parking brake is released.
    4.  
    5. Hold the screw end of the cable so it doesn't rotate.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the locknut.
    8.  
    9. Hold the parking brake cable and turn the adjusting nut until pedal travel is correct. To keep the cable from twisting, always keep the red side facing up.
    10.  
    11. Tighten the locknut to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Install the console box or hole cover, as necessary.
    14.
