Evaporative Canister

To reduce hydrocarbon emissions, evaporated fuel is routed through the charcoal canister into the intake manifold where it is used for combustion in the cylinders.

  1. Note which pipe connections on the canister the vacuum lines go to and disconnect them. This can be done easily with lettered or numbered strips of masking tape.

  3. Remove the charcoal canister.
  4.  
  5. The canister should be checked for clogging and a stuck check valve.
  6.  
  7. Using low pressure compressed air, blow into the tank pipe, and place your hand over the other pipes to ensure that the air flows freely.
  8.  
  9. Blow compressed air into the purge pipe and make sure that air does not flow from the other pipes. If the air does not flow as outlined, replace the canister.
  10.  
  11. If the canister is clogged, it may be cleaned using low pressure compressed air.
  12.  
  13. To clean the canister, blow low pressure compressed air into the tank pipe while holding the upper canister pipe closed.
  14.  
  15. Have a MVAC certified tech recover the A/C system refrigerant. If any of the activated carbon comes out, replace the canister.

NOTE
Do not attempt to wash the canister to clean it.

  1. The charcoal canister vacuum lines and pipe connections should be checked for clogging, pinching, looseness and cracks. Replace all damaged vacuum lines.

  3. Install the charcoal canister and connect the canister hoses to their proper connections.
