REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Avalon, Camry and Camry Solara
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with an air bag, disable the system and secure the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front wheels.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left and right front fender apron seals by removing the 2 bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin and nut holding the steering knuckle to the tie rod end. Using a tie rod puller, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and the control valve shaft.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the upper bolt and remove the lower bolt holding the control valve shaft to the intermediate shaft. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from steering rack housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut to the tube clamp. Remove the clamp from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the return line and the pressure line from the control valve housing. Use a small plastic container to catch the fluid.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 4 stabilizer bar bolts and 2 nuts. Position the stabilizer bar out of the way. Do not remove the bar from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. If necessary, remove the rear engine mounting and bracket for additional clearance.
  26.  
  27. On the V6 engine, remove the oxygen sensor.
  28.  
  29. Remove the 2 steering gear mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the steering gear.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Position the steering gear on the vehicle and install the 2 mounting bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
  2.  
  3. On the V6, install the oxygen sensor.
  4.  
  5. If applicable, install the rear engine mounting bracket and tighten the retaining bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer bar bolts and nuts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the tube clamp and tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering rack and tighten the retaining bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckles with the castellated nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install the front fender apron seals by installing the 2 bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  20.  
  21. Fill the power steering reservoir to specification and bleed the system.
  22.  
  23. Check the front end alignment. The toe adjustment may have to be reset.
