REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
If the vehicle has an air bag, you must wait at least 30 seconds after disconnecting the battery before doing any work. The SRS has a built-in backup which will allow the system to remain energized for a period of time after the power is disconnected.

2S-E Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing belt (See Timing Belt).
  4.
  5. Using Toyota spanner wrench 09278-54012, or equivalent, to hold the camshaft pulley, remove the bolt and the pulley.
  6.

To install:

  1. Align the camshaft knockpin with the matchmark on the camshaft oil seal retainer.
  2.
  3. Align the knockpin with the camshaft sprocket and install the sprocket. Check that the matchmark on the oil seal retainer and center of the small hole below the "E" on the sprocket align.
  4.
  5. Install the bolt. Hold the sprocket with the spanner wrench and torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the timing belt, using the proper procedures.
  8.

3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing belt (See Timing Belt).
  4.
  5. Using Toyota spanner wrench 09278-54012, or equivalent, to hold the camshaft pulley, remove the bolt, washer, pulley and knockpin.
  6.

To install:

  1. Align the camshaft knockpin with the groove of the sprocket and slide on the sprocket.
  2.
  3. Install the bolt and washer. Hold the sprocket with the spanner wrench and torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the timing belt, using the proper procedures.
  6.

3S-GE Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing belt (See Timing Belt).
  4.
  5. Remove the valve covers, using the proper procedures.
  6.
  7. Using a wrench, hold the camshaft and remove the setbolts. Mark the intake and exhaust sprockets, then remove them and the pins.
  8.

To install:

WARNING
There are two types of camshafts, one with 2 holes on the timing pulley contact surface and one with 5 holes on the timing pulley contact surface. All replacement camshafts have five holes.

  1. On the 2-hole camshaft, do the following: Using a wrench, turn the camshafts so that the camshaft knock pin aligns with the matchmark on the rear timing belt cover and the No. 1 cam lobes are pointing outward.
  2.
  3. On the 5-hole camshaft, do the following: Using a wrench, turn the camshaft so that the knock pin aligns with the notch in the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.
  4.
  5. Install the sprockets on the camshafts with the "S" mark pointing out. Align the timing sprocket matchmark with the rear timing belt cover matchmark and install the sprockets.
  6.

WARNING
There are 2 types of camshaft sprockets. One has 5 holes on the camshaft contact surface and one has 1 hole on the contact surface. All replacement pulleys have 5 holes.

  1. On 1-hole sprockets, match the camshaft knock pin with the camshaft sprocket hole. On 5-hole sprockets, insert the knock pin into whichever sprocket and camshaft holes are aligned. If not matched, align the camshaft sprocket hole with the camshaft hole by turning the camshaft a little.
  2.
  3. Hold the camshafts with an adjustable wrench and tighten the pulley set bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the timing belt and valve covers, using the proper procedures.
  6.

3S-GTE Engine
  8.

To install:

  1. Using a wrench, turn and align the groove of the camshaft with the drilled mark of the camshaft No. 1 bearing cap.
  2.
  3. Install the sprockets on the camshafts with the "S" mark pointing out and upward. Align the pin holes of the camshaft and sprocket, then install the knock pin.
  4.
  5. Hold the camshafts with an adjustable wrench and tighten the pulley set bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the timing belt and valve covers, using the proper procedures.
