REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNING
Removal of the intake manifold assembly on fuel injected engines is a complicated and tedious procedure. Make sure all wire, hoses and vacuum lines are marked to simplify installation.-When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

CAUTION
To avoid personal injury and fire, make sure to cover any fuel lines with a shop towel while loosening very slowly. Wear eye protection. On models with an air bag, wait at least 30 seconds from the time that the ignition switch is turned to the lock position and the battery is disconnected before performing any further work.

2S-E Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the coolant.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and tag any wires, hoses or cable in the way of manifold removal. Remove the throttle body assembly.
  4.
  5. Remove the intake manifold retaining bolts. Remove the intake manifold from the vehicle.
  6.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Use new gaskets, as required. Always torque all retaining bolts in progressive steps from the center to the ends to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
  2.

3S-GE and 3S-GTE Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the coolant. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and tag wires, hoses or cables in the way of manifold removal.
  4.
  5. Remove the necessary components in order to gain access to the intake manifold retaining bolts.

  6.
  7. Remove the intake manifold retaining bolts and intake manifold stays. Remove the intake manifold from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse of the removal procedure. Use new gaskets, as required.
  2.
  3. Always torque manifold retaining bolts in progressive steps from the center to the ends to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Install the intake manifold stays in the correct position. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
  4.

3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines
  6.
  7. Remove the throttle body assembly. Remove the cold start injector pipe.
  8.
  9. Remove the air tube assembly. If equipped with power steering remove the hoses before removing the air tube assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove the intake manifold retaining bolts. Remove the intake manifold from the vehicle.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install intake manifold assembly using new gaskets, as required. Tighten the intake manifold mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Torque manifold retaining bolts in progressive steps from the center to the ends.
  2.
  3. Install the air tube assembly. If equipped with power steering, install the hoses to the air tube assembly.
  4.
  5. Install the throttle body assembly. Install the cold start injector pipe.
  6.
  7. Install all the necessary components that were removed in order to gain access to the intake manifold retaining bolts.
  8.
  9. Reconnect all wires, hoses or cables that were removed for manifold removal. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Refill all fluid levels with the specified fluid to the correct level. Start the engine and check for leaks. Road test the vehicle for proper operation
  12.

4A-FE Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the coolant. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and tag wires, hoses or cables in the way of manifold removal.
  4.
