REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
On models with an air bag, wait at least 30 seconds from the time that the ignition switch is turned to the lock position and the battery is disconnected before performing any further work.

1986-89 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect battery cable from negative terminal of battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the console box. Remove the shift lever knob on manual transaxle equipped vehicles. Remove the eight screws and the console box hole cover. Disconnect the connectors and remove the console box.

  9. Remove the glove compartment door.
  10.  
  11. Remove the No. 2 instrument panel speaker panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 1 speaker mounting bracket by removing the one bolt, removing the one or two screws then disconnecting the connector and removing the bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the glove compartment door reinforcement.
  16.  
  17. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel speaker panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine hood release lever.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel finish lower panel and then remove the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  22.  
  23. On the ST model, remove the instrument panel finish lower center panel:
    1. Remove the ash tray.
    2.  
    3. Remove the eight screws.
    4.  
    5. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
    8.

  25. On the GT and GT-S models, remove the instrument panel finish lower center panel:
    1. Remove the ash tray.
    2.  
    3. Remove the six screws.
    4.  
    5. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
    8.

  27. Remove the radio and stereo by removing the four screws, disconnecting the connectors and radio antenna cable, and removing the radio and stereo.

  29. Remove the rear window defogger switch and hazard switch by prying off the defogger switch and hazard switch and disconnecting the connectors.

  31. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel by removing the four screws and pulling out the panel.
  32.  
  33. Remove the combination meter by removing the four screws and disconnecting the connectors.
  34.  
  35. Remove the speedometer cable by pushing on the pawls on the right and left of the meter bracket. Pull the meter bracket from the safety pad.
  36.  
  37. Remove the safety pad:
    1. Remove the four heater control panel mounting screws.
    2.  
    3. Remove two No. 1 instrument panel finish panel retainer mounting screws.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cowl side trim.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the three electrical connectors.
    8.  
    9. Remove four bolts, two screws and two nuts.
    10.  
    11. The safety pad has a boss on the reverse side for clamping onto the clip on the body side. Therefore, when removing, pull upward at an angle.
    12.  
    13. Remove two screws and No. 1 heater to the register duct.
    14.  
    15. Remove the screw and No. 3 junction block from the safety pad.
    16.  
    17. Remove two screws and the wiring harness protector.
    18.  
    19. Remove the glove box light and the courtesy switch and disconnect the connectors.
    20.  
    21. Remove the screw and disconnect the wiring harness clamps from the safety pad.

  39. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel finish panel retainer.
  40.  
  41. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel mounting bracket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the glove compartment door lock striker.
  44.  
  45. Remove the glove compartment door lock mounting bracket.

  47. Remove the No. 3 heater to register duct.
  48.  
  49. Remove the instrument panel center register.
  50.  
  51. Remove the No. 2 instrument panel register.
  52.  
  53. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel register.
  54.  
  55. Remove the side defroster nozzle duct.
  56.  
  57. Remove the side defroster nozzle.
  58.  
  59. Remove the defroster nozzle.
  60.  
  61. Remove the cigarette lighter and cigarette lighter hole bezel.
  62.  
  63. Remove the ash tray retainer.
  64.  
  65. Remove speaker.
  66.  
  67. Remove headlight cleaner switch.
  68.  
  69. Remove rheostat switch.
  70.  

To install:

  1. Install the rheostat switch, headlight cleaner switch, speaker and ash tray retainer.
  2.  
  3. Install the cigarette lighter assembly, defroster nozzles, ducts and registers.
  4.  
  5. Install the glove compartment components and instrument panel components.
  6.  
  7. Install the wiring harnesses and protectors so that wires are not pinched or cannot wear through from vibration.
  8.  
  9. Install the safety pad boss, cowl side trim, instrument and heater control panels, using all mounting hardware removed previously.
  10.  
  11. Install the speedometer cable, first pulling on the cable guide casing.
  12.  
  13. Install the combination meter, finish panel, electrical switches and radio assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the finish lower center panel. Install the remaining panels and ducts. Install the hood release lever, speaker panels and glove compartment door.
  16.  
  17. Install the console box, shift lever knob, if equipped, then install the steering wheel (See ).
  18.  
  19. Reconnect the negative battery terminal, then check all accessories for proper operation. Test drive the vehicle, checking for vibrations and noise.

1990-93 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect battery cable from negative terminal.
  2.  
  3. Remove steering wheel (See ).
  4.  
  5. Remove steering column cover by removing the 4 screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove console box:
    1. Remove console upper panel.
    2.  
    3. Using a flat tool, remove 4 screw caps.
    4.  
    5. Remove 4 screws and 2 bolts.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and remove the console box.
    8.

  9. Remove lower finish panel:
    1. Remove the door scuff plate.
    2.  
    3. Remove 4 screws and the panel.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors.
    6.

  11. Remove engine hood release lever by removing the 2 screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove lower No. 1 finish panel:
    1. Using the screwdriver, pry out the cluster finish panel cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove scuff plate.
    4.  
    5. Remove 6 screws and the panel.
    6.

  15. Remove center cluster finish panel, radio and lower center finish panel:
    1. Remove 2 screws.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, remove the center cluster finish panel and disconnect the connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove 4 screws from the radio.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and the radio antenna cable to remove the radio.
    8.  
    9. Using the screwdriver, remove screw caps.
    10.  
    11. Remove 4 screws and the panel.
    12.

  17. Remove cluster finish panel by removing the lower cluster finish panel and then removing 5 screws. Pull out the cluster finish panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove combination meter, removing the 4 screws and disconnecting the connectors.
  20.  
  21. If the vehicle is equipped with a speedometer cable, push on the pawls on the right and left of the meter bracket. Pull the meter bracket from the safely pad.

  23. Remove safety pad:
    1. Remove the 5 bolts and lower left finish panel.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, remove center register.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the clip and No. 2 heater to register duct.
    8.  
    9. Using the screwdriver, remove No. 2 side defroster nozzle.
    10.  
    11. Remove 6 bolts and 3 nuts.
    12.

To install:

  1. Install the nozzles, ducts and panels. Install the speedometer cable, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Install the combination meter, finish panel, radio and center cluster finish panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the hood release lever, lower finish panel, console box and console upper panel.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column covers and install the steering wheel, using the proper procedures (See ).
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the air bag and rearm the air bag system, using proper procedures (See ).
  10.  
  11. Test drive the vehicle and check for noise or vibrations. Check all accessories for proper operation.
