REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1986-89 Vehicles
HATCHBACK
  1. Remove the high mount stop light cover by pushing on the center of the clip with a thin object.
  2.  
  3. Remove the back door trim panels using a screwdriver to pry out the clips and remove the lower trim panel. Slide the upper trim panel downward along the glass and remove it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the high mount stop light by disconnecting the wire connector and removing the set bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the package tray trim hanger.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the defogger wire connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove rear wiper arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove back door molding and clips.
  14.  
  15. Remove back door glass.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Prior to installing back door glass, first clean body and glass.
  2.  
  3. Install molding retainer.
  4.  
  5. Install the dam by applying double-stick tape at a point 0.31 in. (8mm) from the glass rim and placing the dam on the double-stick tape.
  6.  


WARNING
Cut a V shaped wedge into the corner folds of the dam.

  1. Install the glass in the same manner as the windshield.
  2.  
  3. Install molding clips and back door molding.
  4.  
  5. Reverse the remaining removal procedures to complete installation.
  6.  

COUPE
  1. Remove the scuff plate.
  2.

  1. Remove rear seat cushion and back.
  2.  
  3. Remove rear floor mat setting plate with floor mat.
  4.  
  5. Remove quarter trim molding.
  6.  
  7. Remove front shoulder belt anchor and belt guide.
  8.  
  9. Remove quarter trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove assist grip and roof side inner garnish.
  12.  
  13. Remove head liner rear trim.
  14.  
  15. Remove speaker grille.
  16.  
  17. Remove high mount stop light by pushing on the center of the clip with a thin object. Disconnect the wire connector and remove the set bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove package tray trim panel.
  20.  
  21. Remove defogger wire connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove quarter ventilation louver.
  24.  
  25. Remove rear window molding.
  26.  
  27. Remove rear window glass.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Prior to installing rear window glass, first clean body and glass.
  2.  
  3. Install glass spacer.
  4.  
  5. Install rear window glass in the same manner as the front windshield (See Front Windshield).
  6.  
  7. Install molding clips.
  8.  
  9. Install rear window molding.
  10.  
  11. Reverse the remaining removal procedures to complete installation.
  12.  

1990-93 Vehicles
HATCHBACK
  1. Remove the high mount stop light cover by pushing on the center of the clip with a thin object.
  2.  
  3. Remove the back door trim panels using a screwdriver to pry out the clips and remove the lower trim panel. Slide the upper trim panel downward along the glass and remove it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the high mount stop light by disconnecting the wire connector and removing the set bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the package tray trim hanger.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the defogger wire connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove rear wiper arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove back door molding and clips.
  14.  
  15. Remove back door glass.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean and shape contact surface of body by removing the retainers and removing any dam remaining on the body. Cut away any rough areas with a knife. Clean the cutting surface of the urethane gum with a piece of shop rag saturated in cleaner.
  2.  


WARNING
Leave as much of the urethane layer on the body as possible. Even if all the urethane has been removed, clean the body.

  1. Clean removed glass before installation by using a scraper to remove the urethane gum sticking to the glass. Clean the glass with a cleaner.
  2.  


WARNING
Do not touch the glass after cleaning it.

  1. Position glass by placing glass in correct position. Check that all contacts parts of the glass rim are perfectly even and do not make contact with the fasteners. Place reference marks between the glass and body. Remove the glass.
  2.  
  3. Clean contact surface of glass, using a cleaner to clean the contact surface black-colored area around the entire glass rim.
  4.  
  5. Coat contact surface of body with primer "M" using manufacturer's instructions.
  6.  
  7. Coat contact surface of glass with Primer "G" using manufacturer's instructions.
  8.  
  9. Mix adhesive coating according to manufacturers instructions.
  10.  
  11. Coat the glass with adhesive on all contact surfaces along the ridge. Adhesive height should be 0.138-0.197 in. (3.5-5.0mm) if adhesive remains on body. If no adhesive remains on body, adhesive height should be 0.31-0.39 in. (8-10mm).
  12.  
  13. In order to install glass, position the glass so that the reference marks are lined up, and press in gently along the rim. Using a spatula, apply adhesive on the glass rim. Use a spatula to remove any excess or protruding adhesive. Fasten glass securely until the adhesive sets.
  14.  


WARNING
Align the bolts of the retainer with the body holes, then install the glass with four nuts.

  1. Install back door molding.
  2.  
  3. Inspect for leaks and repair with auto glass sealer.
  4.  
  5. Install back door trim, back door upper trim, back door side trim, high mount stop light and cover and wiper arm.
  6.  
  7. Connect defogger wire connectors.
  8.
