SHIFTER LEVER FREE-PLAY



4WD Models
1988-89
  1. Adjust the shifter lever seat clearance by selecting a shim that will provide a 0.1-0.2 lb. preload at the top of the lever.
  2.  
  3. When the proper shim is selected, install the shim in the shifter lever seat.
  4.

1990 MODELS
  1. Remove selecting spring cover, selecting bellcrank and torsion spring.
  2.  
  3. Install and torque the selecting spring cover and torque to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Adjust the shifter lever seat clearance by selecting a shim that will provide a 0.1-0.3 lb. preload at the top of the lever.
  6.  
  7. When the proper shim is selected, install the shim in the shifter lever seat.
  8.

CLUTCH SWITCH




WARNING
Before performing any inspections or adjustments, check that the clutch pedal height, clutch pedal and pushrod free-play are correct.

  1. Check the clearance:
    1. Check that the engine does not start when the clutch pedal is released.
    2.  
    3. Check that the engine does start when the clutch pedal is depressed.
    4.  
    5. If necessary, adjust or replace the clutch start switch.
    6.

  3. Check the continuity:
    1. Disconnect the clutch switch connector.
    2.  
    3. With an ohmmeter, check for continuity across the connector terminals with the switch button pushed in the on position.
    4.  
    5. Release the switch button and check that there is no continuity across the terminals.
    6.  
    7. If the switch continuity is not as specified, replace the clutch switch.
    8.  
    9. Connect the clutch switch connector.
    10.

  5. Adjust the switch on 1983-88 models as follows:
    1. Measure the stroke of the clutch pedal.
    2.  
    3. Using the stoke measurement and the clearance chart provided, determine the proper switch clearance for the pedal stroke.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the clutch switch locknut and adjust the switch so that clearance ""A" is greater than 0.04 inch (1mm) when the clutch is fully depressed.
    6.
