Rear Hub and Bearing

REPLACEMENT



2WD Models
  1. Clamp the knuckle in a vise with protected jaws.
  2.  
  3. Unstake the hub nut and remove the nut.
  4.  
  5. Using a puller, remove the axle shaft from the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bearing inner race (inside).
  8.  
  9. Using a 2-armed puller, pull off the bearing inner race (outside), remove the oil seal, then press out the bearing.
  10.  

To reassemble:

  1. Press in a new bearing and oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Position a new bearing inner race (inside) on the bearing and then press the inner race with the hub onto the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the nut and tighten it to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm). Stake the nut.
  6.

4WD Models
  1. Clamp the knuckle in a vise with protected jaws.
  2.  
  3. Press the axle shaft (not drive axle) from the hub.
  4.  
  5. Pull the inner race from the axle shaft. Remove the backing plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner and outer seal. Remove the snapring and press out the bearing.
  8.  

To reassemble:

  1. Press in a new bearing and install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Install a new outer oil seal. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
  4.  
  5. Install the backing plate, torquing the nuts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Press in the axle shaft into the carrier. Install the inner oil seal.
  8.
