Suspension Arm and Strut Rod

REMOVAL & ISTALLATION



2WD Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut rod by removing the bolt and nut from the axle carrier. Remove the bolt, nut and strut rod.
  4.  
  5. To remove the rear suspension arms No. 1 and No. 2, perform the following:
    1. Remove the nut from the axle carrier of the No. 2 arm.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the adjusting cam bolts and the suspension member.
    4.  
    5. Remove the service hole cover.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the bolt and remove the toe adjust plate No. 2.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolt with toe adjust cam, disconnect the No. 2 suspension arm from the suspension member.
    10.  
    11. Remove the No. 2 arm.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bolt, washer and nut, then disconnect the No. 1 arm from the suspension member.
    14.  
    15. Remove the bolt from the axle carrier and disconnect the No. 1 arm from the carrier.

To install:

  1. Install the suspension arm No. 1 and No. 2:
    1. Temporarily install the arm No. 1 with a bolt, washer and nut. Face the mark on the arm rearward.
    2.  
    3. Temporarily install arm No. 2 with a bolt, toe adjust cam and toe adjust plate, facing the mark rearward.
    4.  
    5. Assemble the suspension arms with a bolt to the carrier.
    6.

  3. Install the strut rod by temporarily installing the strut rod to the carrier. Raise the axle carrier and install the rod.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle. Bounce it to stabilize the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Torque the No. 1 suspension arm bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm). Torque the No. 2 arm bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Have the rear wheel alignment checked.

4WD Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut rod by removing the bolt and nut from the axle carrier. Remove the bolt, nut and strut rod.
  4.  
  5. To remove the rear suspension arm No. 1, perform the following:
    1. Remove the bolt and nut from the axle carrier.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the adjusting cam bolts and the control arm retainer.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolt, toe adjusting cam and toe adjusting plate No. 2.
    6.  
    7. Remove the No. 1 suspension arm.
    8.

  7. Remove the No. 2 suspension arm:
    1. Remove the bolt and nut from the axle carrier.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt, washer and No. 2 arm.
    4.

To install:

  1. Install suspension arm No. 2 by finger tightening the bolt with the washer, then finger tightening the arm-to-axle carrier bolt and nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the No. 1 arm:
    1. Install the arm No. 1 to the rear suspension member.
    2.  
    3. Align the matchmarks on the toe adjusting cam and arm retainer.
    4.  
    5. Install the toe adjusting plate No. 2 and finger tighten the bolt.
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 1 arm to the carrier and finger tighten the bolt.
    8.

  5. Install the strut rod by temporarily installing the strut rod to the body. Install the rod to the carrier and finger tighten the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Temporarily install the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle and bounce it to stabilize the suspension.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle. Place stands under the vehicle so it is supported safely. Remove the rear wheels.
  12.  
  13. Torque the No. 2 suspension arm bolt of suspension member side to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm). Torque the No. 2 arm bolt of carrier side to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Torque the No. 1 arm, first aligning the matchmarks, then tighten the bolt of the member side to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and the bolt of the carrier side to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Torque the strut rod bolt of the body side to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and the bolt of the carrier side to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the rear wheels and have the rear wheel alignment checked.
  20.
