REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
Make sure the spiral cable is centered before installing the steering wheel on vehicles with air bag. Failure to do so can render the air bag system inoperative, preventing the air bag from deploying in an accident, causing injury or death.

Vehicles Without Air Bag

WARNING
Do NOT attempt to remove or install the steering wheel by hammering on it. Damage to the energy-absorbing steering column could result.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. Loosen the trim pad retaining screws from the back side of the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Lift the trim pad and horn button assembly from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel hub retaining nut and washer.
  6.  
  7. Scratch matchmarks on the hub and shaft to aid in correct installation.
  8.  
  9. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the wheel retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs.

Vehicles With Air Bag

WARNING

  1. Loosen the trim pad retaining screws from the back side of the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Lift the trim pad and horn button assembly from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel hub retaining nut and washer.
  6.  
  7. Scratch matchmarks on the hub and shaft to aid in correct installation.
  8.  
  9. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Center the spiral cable:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 2 1 / 2 turns to align the red mark. At this point the spiral cable is centered.
    6.  
    7. Install the steering wheel.
    8.

  3. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the wheel retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
