Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

OPERATION



The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor provides a signal through the ignition module which the ECM uses as a reference to calculate rpm and crankshaft position.

TESTING



5S-FE Engine

The testing of this sensor is done with the engine hot and cold. Cold is from 14-122°F (-10-50°C), hot is from 122-212°F (50-100°C).

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor wiring from the alternator drive belt adjusting bar.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals.

    Cold-985-1600 ohms
     
    Hot-1265-1890 ohms
     

  4.  
  5. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
  6.  
  7. Reattach the sensor wiring.
  8.  

7A-FE Engine

See Figure 1

The testing of this sensor is done with the engine hot and cold. Cold is from 14-122°F (-10-50°C), hot is from 122-212°F (50-100°C).

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor wiring.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals.

    Cold-1630-2740 ohms
     
    Hot-2065-3225 ohms
     

  4.  
  5. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
  6.  
  7. Reattach the sensor wiring.
  8.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor wiring.
  2.  

On some models the wiring may be attached to the drive belt adjusting bar.

  1. On some engines, remove the RH fender apron seal.
  2.  
  3. On the 5S-FE engine, remove the No. 1 timing belt cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt and sensor.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Insert the sensor and secure with the retaining bolt to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install and secure the No. 1 timing belt cover on 5S-FE engines.
  4.  
  5. Install the RH fender apron if removed.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wiring to the sensor.
  8.
