Throttle Position (TP) Sensor

OPERATION



To reduce HC and CO emissions, the Throttle Position (TP) sensor opens the throttle valve to slightly more than the idle position when decelerating. This keeps the air/fuel ratio from becoming excessively rich when the throttle valve is quickly closed. In addition, the TP is used to increase idle rpm when power steering fluid pressure exceeds a calibrated value and/or when a large electrical load is placed on the electrical system (headlights, rear defogger etc).

TESTING



5S-FE Engine

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.020-0.028 inch (0.50-0.70mm) feeler gage between the throttle stop screw and stop lever.
  4.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between each terminal.

  1. If necessary adjust the sensor, loosen the 2 screws of the sensor.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.024 inch (0.60mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and stop lever.
  4.  
  5. Connect the tester probe of an ohmmeter to the terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects, and secure it with the 2 set screws.
  8.

  1. Recheck the continuity between terminals IDL and E2.

  1. Disconnect the throttle position sensor wiring.
  2.

  1. Disconnect the throttle opener vacuum hose from the throttle body.
  2.  
  3. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.

  1. Insert a feeler gage between the throttle stop screw and stop lever.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between each terminal.
  2.

  1. If necessary, adjust the throttle position sensor.
    1. Loosen the 2 set-screws of the sensor.
    2.  
    3. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
    4.  
    5. Insert a 0.028 inch (0.70mm) feeler gage between the throttle stop screw and stop lever.
    6.  
    7. Connect the test probe of the ohmmeter to the terminals IDL and E2 of the throttle position sensor.
    8.  
    9. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects, and secure it with the set screws.
    10.  
    11. Recheck the continuity between terminals IDL and E2.
    12.

  3. Reattach the throttle opener vacuum hose to the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the throttle position sensor wiring.
  6.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figure 14

  1. Disconnect the harness from the throttle position sensor.
  2.  
  3. Remove the mounting screws and extract the sensor.
  4.

To install:
  1. Make certain the throttle plate is fully closed. With the throttle body held in its normal orientation, place the sensor onto the throttle body so that the electrical connector is in the correct position.
  2.  
  3. Turn the sensor clockwise as shown and temporarily install the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the throttle position sensor.
