Axle Carrier Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figure 1

  1. Loosen the rear lugnuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. On disc brake models, remove the disc and caliper.
  8.  
  9. On rear drum models, remove the drum.
  10.  
  11. Check the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the stub axle. To access the bolts , turn the hub where a bolt is accessible through the holes.
  14.  
  15. Pull the hub and bearing assembly off .
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the old O-ring.
  18.  
  19. On drum brakes, remove the brake hose from the shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the backing plate from the rear axle carrier. Support the backing plate securely.
  22.  
  23. On models with ABS, disconnect the ABS speed sensor from the rear axle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nut and bolt, then disconnect the strut rod from the rear axle carrier.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 2 nuts from the lower portion of the shock absorber but do not remove the bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the nut and bolt, then disconnect the lower suspension arms from the carrier.
  30.  
  31. Pull out the 2 bolts from the shock absorber, then remove the rear axle carrier.
  32.  

To install:
  1. Position the axle carrier and stabilize the suspension then secure the lower suspension arms to the carrier. Tighten (nut B) to 145 ft. lbs. (197 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Secure the suspension and attach the shock absorber lower set bolts and tighten (nut A) to 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm).

  1. With the suspension stabilized, attach the strut rod to the axle carrier and secure the bolt and nut to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).

  3. On ABS models attach the speed sensor and tighten the bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the remaining components, check the ABS signal and have a rear wheel alignment.
