CAUTION
All models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds once the battery cable is disconnected to perform any work on the vehicle. this will hinder air bag deployment.
  2.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4.
  5. Unbolt and extract the filler tube.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the throttle cable.
  8.
  9. On A246E models equipped with cruise control, remove the actuator.
  10.
  11. Remove the air cleaner.
  12.
  13. Remove the engine left mounting upper side bolt(s).
  14.
  15. Remove the throttle cable and ground cable mounting bolts.
  16.
  17. Remove the starter.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the neutral safety switch, speed sensor and solenoid wiring.
  20.
  21. Disconnect the oil cooler hoses.
  22.

  24.
  25. Disconnect the pressure and return lines.
  26.
  27. Install an engine support fixture.
  28.
  29. Raise and support the vehicle.
  30.
  31. Remove the engine under covers., then drain the transaxle fluid.
  32.
  33. Remove the left and right driveshafts. Refer to the procedure in this section.
  34.

  44.
  45. Remove the converter clutch cover. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the bolts. Hold the crankshaft pulley set bolt and remove the six bolts.
  46.
  47. On the A140E, remove the three bolts and the transaxle.
  48.
  49. On the A246E, remove the two engine left mounting lower side bolts, then the five bolts and the transaxle.
  50.
  51. Installation is the reverse order of removal, but keep these important steps in mind:
    1. If the torque converter has been drained and washed, refill with new ATF.
    2.
    3. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the installed surface to the front surface of the transaxle housing. Correct distance should be:

      A246E-0.898 inch (22.8mm)

      1994-95 A140E-0.898 inch (22.8mm)

      1996-98 A140E-0.512 inch (13.0mm)

    4.
    5. Jack up the transaxle and align the two knock pins on the block with the converter housing and secure the bolts as follows:
