Removal & Installation
- Disconnect the cable at the negative battery terminal. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
Work must NOT be started until after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable has been disconnected. The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source so that if work is started within 90 seconds of disconnecting the negative battery cable, the SRS may deploy. When the negative terminal cable is disconnected from the battery, memory of the clock and radio will be canceled. Before you start working, make a note of the contents memorized by the audio memory system. When you have finished working, reset the audio systems and adjust the clock. Never use a back-up power supply from outside the vehicle.
- Remove the engine undercovers, as required.
- Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
- Remove the battery if necessary.
- For Canadian models, disconnect the relay box for the Daytime Running Light (DRL) system from the radiator.
- Remove the upper radiator hose.
- Remove the cooling fan electrical connector clamp then detach the wiring.
- Disconnect the O2 sensor wiring harness attached to the fan shroud.
- Remove the 4 mounting bolts and the cooling fan.
- Reinstall the cooling fan and attach with the 4 bolts and tighten to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
- Reconnect the cooling fan wiring and secure with the clamp.
- Reinstall the upper radiator hose.
- If removed, install the relay box for the DRL system.
- Connect the cable at the negative battery terminal.
- Refill the cooling system and bleed.
- Check the cooling fan for proper operation.
- Check the cooling fan operation at a low temperature of 181°F (83°C).
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Check that the cooling fan stops. If not, check the cooling fan relay ad the engine coolant temperature switch. Inspect for separated connectors or severed wire between the cooling fan relay and engine coolant switch.
- Disconnect the engine coolant temperature switch wiring.
- Check that the cooling fan rotates. If not, check the fuses, engine main relay, cooling fan relay, cooling fan, and for a short circuit between the cooling fan relay and engine coolant temperature switch.
- Reattach the engine coolant switch wiring.
- Start the engine and raise the temperature to above 199°F (93°C). Check that the cooling fan rotates. If not replace the temperature switch.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds once the cable is disconnected to hinder airbag deployment.
- Disconnect the cooling fan wiring.
- Connect the battery and ammeter to the cooling fan wiring.
- Check that the cooling fan rotates smoothly, then check the reading on the ammeter. Standard amperage is 5.8-7.4 amps.
- Reconnect the wiring for the cooling fan.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
