Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
  2.

  1. On manual transaxles, remove the eight retaining bolts for the flywheel.
  2.  
  3. On automatics, remove the eight bolts, front plate, drive plate and rear spacer.
  4.  

To install:

  1. On manual transaxles, do the following:
    1. Apply adhesive to the first 2-3 threads of the bolt end. Three Bond® 1324 or equivalent is recommended.
    2.  
    3. Install the flywheel on the crankshaft.
    4.  
    5. Install and uniformly tighten the eight bolts in several passes in sequence as shown in the illustration to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).

  1. On automatics, do the following:
    1. Apply adhesive to the first 2-3 threads of the bolt end. Three Bond® 1324 or equivalent is recommended.
    2.  
    3. Install the driveplate on the crankshaft.
    4.  
    5. Install and uniformly tighten the eight bolts in several passes in sequence as shown in the illustration to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

  1. Remove the transaxle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the clutch cover assembly for manual transmissions.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clutch disc assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. For automatics, remove the drive plate and ring gear subassembly via the eight bolts.
  10.  
  11. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  12.  
  13. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in tape, pry out the oil seal.
  14.  
  15. Check the crankshaft for damage. If so, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Apply multi-purpose grease to a new oil seal lip.
    CAUTION
    Keep it free of dirt and foreign objects.

  2.  
  3. Tap in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge.
  4.  
  5. Wipe off excess grease from the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive plate and ring gear for automatics or the flywheel sub assembly for manuals. Make sure the eight bolts and holes are clean.
  8.  
  9. Apply a thread lock to two or three of the bolts. Torque, using several steps, until you reach 65 ft. lbs (88 Nm). For the flywheel, torque to 36 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Mark the bolts with paint and retighten them another 90 degrees in the same sequence.
  12.  
  13. Install the clutch disc assembly for manuals.
  14.  
  15. Install the clutch cover for manuals.
  16.  
  17. Install the transaxle.
