Removal & Installation




NOTE
The following procedures apply to engines using a timing belt. The procedures for front cover seals can be found later in this section.

5e-FE Engine

NOTE
The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    When removing the front seal, be extremely careful not to damage the crankshaft.



    Negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Front covers and the timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket
     

  4.  
  5. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip
  6.  
  7. Tape the end of a flat bladed tool to avoid damaging crankshaft. Pry out the oil seal using the taped end of the tool
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil seal riding surface on the crankshaft for signs of wear or damage
  10.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the seal bore with a clean rag
  2.  
  3. Apply multipurpose grease the lip of a new oil seal
  4.  
  5. Drive the oil seal into place. Be sure the seal surface is flush with the oil pump case edge. Work from the front of the cover. Be extremely careful not to damage the seal
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Sprocket without disturbing the Woodruff key
     
    Timing belt and front covers
     
    Negative battery cable

5S-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.



    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     



    Timing belt covers and the timing belt
     
    Front crankshaft gear from the crankshaft. Be sure not to damage any part of the crankshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Pry out the oil seal. Wrap the edge of the tool with a rag or tape to prevent damaging the crankshaft. Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Using a new seal, apply a thin layer of liquid sealer to the outside of the seal.
  2.  
  3. Apply multi purpose grease to the new oil seal lip.
  4.  
  5. Oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump body edge.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt and the timing belt covers
     
    All other components
     
    Negative battery cable
