Oil Pump

Inspection

The oil pump is responsible for providing constant lubrication to the whole engine and so it is recommended that a new oil pump be installed when rebuilding the engine.

Completely disassemble the oil pump and thoroughly clean all of the components. Inspect the oil pump gears and housing for wear and/or damage. Insure that the pressure relief valve operates properly and there is no binding or sticking due to varnish or debris. If all of the parts are in proper working condition, lubricate the gears and relief valve, and assemble the pump.

  1. Inspect the oil jet by applying air pressure to the path and then check the oil jet for damage or clogging. If the air does not blow out from the oil jet, replace the oil pump.
  2.
  3. Inspecr the oil pump relief valve by coating the oil pump relief valve with engine oil and then check that it falls smoothing into the valve hole by its own weight.
  4.
  5. Inspect the oil pump rotor by using a feeler gauge to measure:

The clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips. Standard tip clearance is 0.040 to 0.160 mm (0.0016 to 0.0063 in.) and maximum tip clearance is 0.160 mm (0.0063 in.). If the tip clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.

Measure the clearance between the two rotors and precision straight edge. Standard clearance is 0.025 to 0.071 mm (0.0010 to 0.0028 in.) and maximum clearance is 0.071 mm (0.0028 in.). If the side clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.

Measure the clearance between the driven motor and the oil pump body. Standard clearance is 0.260 to 0.325 mm (0.0102 to 0.0128 in.) and maximum clearance is 0.325 mm (0.0128 in.). If the body clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.

Removal & Installation

The engine must be raised and supported to access the oil pump. A suitable engine hoist must be used.
